SCC Offers Course on Social Security

CONTRIBUTED

If cool morning breezes, children with backpacks boarding yellow buses and store aisles filled with the latest calculators and cool school supplies make you yearn for the classroom, it’s not too late.

Sandhills Community College invites people to join the thousands of Sandhills residents who learn new crafts and art forms, begin speaking foreign languages, master their home computers and explore history and current events every year.

SCC’s Division of Continuing Education offers dozens of classes through Community Enrichment and the Center for Creative Retirement, providing opportunities for learning to become a lifelong endeavor.

Social Security is the topic of a new course offered by the Center for Creative Retirement this fall. The class, titled “Social Security: Here and Now vs. Then and There,” will provide background information on the current status of the Social Security system and the various proposals for its future structure.

Not intended as a political debate, the course objective is to provide participants with information on the topic and a framework for reaching their own conclusions.

The instructor, Dick Johnson, holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to retiring and providing consulting services, Johnson worked for the now disbanded Westinghouse Electric Corporation in technical, commercial and marketing positions.

The class meets on Wednesdays from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Van Dusen 102, beginning Oct. 5 and ending on Dec. 14.

The Center for Creative Retirement is also offering courses with topics such as financial decision making for retirees and jewelry and gem buying. In December, Vivian Jacobsen will conduct a lecture series on the artist Marc Chagall.

Not all courses require a commitment of more than one day. On Friday, Dec. 2, people can spend one afternoon with national memory champion Scott Hagwood. In Hagwood’s seminar, Developing Your Picture Perfect Memory, you’ll learn to recall names and faces, improve short term memory, develop long term memory, learn more efficiently, become more productive, develop self confidence – and be able to find those elusive car keys. This popular lecture is free and fills up quickly, so please call ahead to reserve seating.
