Yelovich Wins CGA’s Senior Women’s Title

By Howard Ward: Golf Writer

Dianne Yelovich of Pinehurst shot a 1-under-par 71 on Wednesday to win the second annual North Carolina Senior Women’s Amateur Championship held at The Peninsula Club in Cornelius.

Yelovich, a former Moore County amateur champion, posted a 36-hole total of 148 to win by two strokes over Melissa Sage of Charlotte. It was the first Carolinas Golf Association win for Yelovich, a former ski instructor in California.

Sage, who led after the first round with a 72, made triple bogey on the final hole and finished at 150.

“My short game was on fire,” Yelovich said of the under-par round. “I was paired in the second to last group and had no idea what the leaders were doing. I think it helped me that I didn’t know. I just kept making pars and once in a while the birdies fell in, too. I’m thrilled to have won this championship.”

Yelovich served as a volunteer in the recent U.S. Open at Pinehurst and also works occasionally as a caddie on the No. 2 Course. She credits that experience for helping her read greens and remain patient.

Kathy Bounds, formerly of Wagram and now a Cary resident, was second with 158 in the First Flight, while Vicki DiSantis of Pinehurst was fifth at 163. Ida Kraslawsky of Southern Pines tied for ninth with 168.

Marjory Leidy of Pinehurst was eighth in the Second Flight with 173, followed by Isabelle Daley of Whispering Pines with 175. Patricia Smith of Wagram was 10th with 176. Donna Rotondo of Pinehurst tied for 16th with 179.

Barbara Kuhn of Aberdeen won the Third Flight with 92-84—176. Anne Wright of Pinehurst tied for fifth with 181.

Sue Kress of Southern Pines was second in the Fourth Flight with 186, followed by Diane Vosilus of Pinehurst with 188. Peggy Clark of Pinehurst took seventh with 196, while Lynlee Long of Pinehurst tied for eighth with 197.

In the Super Senior division (for players 65 and over) Dollie Watson of Lexington won over Gloria Anthony of Greensboro by five shots.

Dot Bounds of Wagram and Carolyn Baker of Southern Pines were tied for eighth at 181, while Marilyn Otto of Pinehurst was 12th with 189.

Barbara Burke of Wagram was 15th with 200.
