SPORTS BRIEFS: O’Neal, Ross Top Visitors in Soccer

The second goal of the afternoon by Willie Ross midway through the second half held up for a 2-1 O’Neal boys’ soccer victory at George Mauser Field on Tuesday.

Ross, the only junior on a young Falcon squad, tied the match with High Point Christian at 1-1 with an unassisted goal near the end of the first half.

On the game-winner, he took possession of the ball just past midfield and beat a number of defenders before depositing the ball in the net.

The win was not a lock until the Falcon defense, led by senior sweeper Jonathan Summey and freshman goalkeeper Ben Jackson, turned away a number of threats by the home team.

Jackson finished with 10 saves.

“In the last six minutes, I think we were just trying to hold up,” Falcon coach Kyle Kegl said. “Jackson made some huge saves.”

Summey is the only starting senior on a squad that includes 11 freshmen, eight sophomores, one junior and four seniors. The win improved the Falcons to 2-3 in the Triad Athletic Conference and 2-7 overall. The next match is tonight at 4:30 p.m. at Oak Ridge Military.

Mustangs Win

The first-ranked (1-A) North Moore boys’ soccer team returned to its winning ways with a 4-0 victory at West Montgomery Wednesday evening.

That sets up a 6:30 p.m. conference match at home on Monday against second-ranked Jordan-Matthews, the defending state 1-A champion.

Rebounding from Monday’s 4-3 loss to East Montgomery, goalkeepers Diego Garcia and Eric Diaz combined to pitch the shutout in the convincing victory over the Warriors. Edwin De La Cruz opened the scoring in the seventh minute of the first half with an assist from Misael Gutierrez.

About midway through the half, Raul Chavez scored unassisted.

A few minutes later, Eric Diaz put one in with help from Joaquin Diaz, making it 3-0. Eric Diaz scored the only goal of the second half. The win improves the Mustangs to 2-1-1 in the Yadkin Valley Conference and 7-2-2 overall.
