Steelers, Packers Get Wins in Optimist Play

Last Saturday, the Steelers defeated the Redskins, while the Packers defeated the Panthers in the second week of the Sandhills Optimist tackle football league.

Steelers 26, Redskins 6

Daniel Harmon rushed for nearly 100 yards and scored on a 48-yard keeper. Josh Roberts and Aaron Reimer scored on runs of 55 and five yards, respectively.

The final touchdown came on a 24-yard fumble return by Tristan Helms. Ryan Baker, Seth McDonald, Ryan Bender and Brandon turned in strong defensive performances.

The Redskins scored on a 1-yard plunge by quarterback Dalton Bullard. Offensive linemen Patrick Guarante, Zack Atkins, Ryan Weibert, Culley Bayless and Conley Lomax led the way on the 43-yard scoring drive.

Jackson Maples, Aric Gunther and Jacob Green played well on defense.

Packers 16, Panthers 0

The Packer defense led by Jared Gudin, Chance Castillo and Brian Hendrick carried the day for the team. Hendrick's fumble recovery, sacks by Gregory Mello, Morgan Van Camp and Sam Bower and Brian Smith's second interception of the year all contributed to the shutout.

The first Packer score was set up by a 35-yard halfback pass from Tyler Barber to Morgan Van Camp. Van Camp scored the second touchdown on a sneak following runs by Barber and Brower. The blocking of Morgan Braswell, Tylez Russell and Storm Jessup led the final drive.

The Panthers' strong defensive performance included a key interception by linebacker Jackson Smith. The offense was unable to score despite determined running by Cody Roberts, Zach Cooper, Matthew Maness and Braxton Ross.

Flag Football

The following are the results for the first two weeks of the Sandhills Optimist flag football league.

Panthers 30, Vikings 13

Sawyer Dixon ran for four touchdowns for the Panthers and also caught a pass from quarterback Davis Byrd. Free safety Tommy Vinson had seven tackles and one sack for the Panthers on defense.

For the Vikings, Noah Thompson scored one touchdown and Sam Kruyer passed to Evan Braswell for a touchdown and a conversion. Garris Stokes and Sam Williams led the defense by making several key stops.

Vikings 47, Cowboys 32

Tyreese Kelley scored five touchdowns, Noah Thompson added two scores and Sam Kruyer and Evan Braswell combined for several conversions to lead an explosive Viking attack. Cody Mollineux, Garris Stokes, Sam Williams, Nick Deemer and Joseph Melvin led the Viking defense.

Bears 18, Broncos 12

Cody Peele scored one touchdown for the Broncos and Spencer Fogleman threw to Owen Valenti for the other. Fogleman led the Broncos defensively with three tackles.

Falcons 12, Raiders 12

For the Falcons, Kyle Corbett scored two touchdowns, including the tying score as time ran out.

Outstanding defense was played by Matthew Fedder, Keegan Good, Christopher Masar and Clay Schaber. Each one of them had several flag pulls and pass deflections.

Panthers 44, Cowboys 36

Sawyer Dixon ran for five touchdowns and Johnny Roberts ran for two for the Panthers. Cornerback Jack Leonard had two sacks and six tackles to lead the Panthers on defense. Matthew Mindak had three scores for the Cowboys and had one interception. Jack Massei and Griffin Cryan each scored one touchdown.

Anderson Allgeyer was two for two passing.

Bears 22, Rams 20

Ayinde’ McKnight had a touchdown run and an interception for the Bears. Also for the Bears, Cameron Brown scored a touchdown and made four points on conversions and Barry Foster caught a touchdown pass. Leading the Bears defensively were Matthew Peele, Houston Snowden and Harrison Frye each with big stops on fourth down. Dakota Hill threw for two touchdowns.

Panthers 56, Broncos 0

Daniel Gualteros and Grey Kittrell both had 55-yard touchdown runs for the Panthers. Cornerback Steven Driscoll also had a touchdown run and made seven tackles for the Panthers on defense.

Owen Valenti had a long run to position the Broncos to score before time ran out. Jared Via and Cody Peele led the Bronco defense with three tackles each.

Bears 34, Vikings 27

Dakota Hill scored three touchdowns, including the last-second game-winner on a 45-yard scamper.

Barry Foster had a touchdown pass, scored two extra points and made six tackles. Matthew Woodward had two key stops on fourth downs and Ayinde’ McKnight had an interception and seven tackles.

Cameron Brown had a long run for a touchdown and ran in another two-point conversion.

Also for the Bears, Harrisen Frye had a sack and Matt Fee was credited with three tackles.

For the Vikings, Tyreese Kelly ran for two touchdowns and Sam Kruyer tossed to J.D. Melvin and Evan Braswell for two more scores to lead a balanced attack. Caleb Hendrix, Garris Stokes, and Sam Williams led the Viking defense.

Vikings 38, Panthers 6

Sam Kruyer passed to Noah Thompson and J.D. Melvin for Viking touchdowns. He also threw two conversion passes to Evan Braswell and ran for another score.

Tyreese Kelly, Noah Thompson and Cody Mollineux scored the other Viking touchdowns.

Sam Williams, Nick Deemer, Caleb Hendrix led the Viking defense.
