GOLF EVENTS: S.P. Club Has Tourneys on Tap

A new feature in the golf section of The Pilot will provide information about events taking place at golf courses in the local area.

Any event that is open to the public, either as a participant or as a spectator, will be listed.

Information about any benefit tournament, competition tournament, or golf-related event, can be supplied in the following way: Sent by e-mail to apcnancy@mindspring.com, dropped off at the front desk of The Pilot, or sent by fax to The Pilot at (910) 692-9382, attention Nancy O’Connell.

Sept. 14-16 — Southern Pines Elks Lodge #1692 will host the 25th Annual Four-Ball Golf Tournament. Flights determined after first round. Entry fee $320 per team. Applications available at the Southern Pines Pro Shop or Elks Lodge #1692. Awards banquet on Sept. 16. Contestants must hold an Elk membership.

Sept. 14 — Hole in one pays $1 million in this benefit for the Boys and Girls Club of the Sandhills. Finals will be held Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 5 p.m. at the National Golf Club. Entry fee is $500, and is a tax-deductible donation to the area Boys and Girls Club. Ticket entitles you to 10 shots at Pine Needles driving range to qualify for the finals. Sept. 22 — The Sandhills Chapter of the Military Officers Association is holding its annual Junior ROTC golf tournament at Southern Pines Country Club. All proceeds of the event are used to fund scholarships for area Junior ROTC high school students. Raffle prizes and prizes for hole in one, longest drive, and longest putt will be awarded. Lunch provided. Registration begins at 9 a.m., with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. Entry fee is $50 per player. Oct. 1 — Woodlake Country Club is holding the Hydrilla Thrilla. The tournament is held to raise funds to purchase young grass carp that will be added to the lake in order to reduce the growth called Hydrilla that is found in the 1,200-acre lake. Entry fee is $50 for guests. The format is captain’s choice with a 9 a.m. starting time. There is a $10 optional fee for lunch. Hole and tee sponsorships available. Oct. 17 — The Public Education Foundation of Moore County is holding its fourth annual golf tournament at National Golf Club. The proceeds from the tournament will be used to provide grants to teachers in the county school system for innovative projects and programs for which funding is not available. The cost is $600 per foursome. The format is best ball of foursome with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Check-in begins at 11:30 a.m. A box lunch will be provided prior to play, and there will be an award ceremony dinner and silent auction after play. Oct. 15-16 — Country Club of Whispering Pines will host “Not Just Another Charity Golf Tournament,” for the benefit of Solutions For Animals Inc., a non-profit organization. Format is three-player teams, captain’s choice. Entry fee is $175 per player/$525 team. Tee times will run from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m with a Saturday evening buffet for all players (guest cost is $25).
