Birdie, No Bogeys

Birdie: By the good people of Moore County who have contributed their time, talent and treasure to those Gulf Coast residents devastated by the catastrophic Hurricane Katrina, which some are calling the worst natural disaster in our country’s history. That our caring community would leap to the forefront of the relief effort comes as no surprise to anyone. That’s what we do — help those in need. But this case hits even closer to home. Those that have lived in this special place awhile know that the expression, “There but for the grace of God go I,” applies to us. In 1996 and again in 1999, Hurricanes Fran and Floyd both had the Sandhills in their sights.

Fortunately for us, but not our Down East cousins, both massive storms took a right turn at landfall and spared the Sandhills. As in the aftermath of those disasters, our Katrina relief efforts so far have been equally impressive. Keep up the noble work, folks.
