Brodie Baker of Bermuda Run (71-73-70—214) and Bill Cox of Gastonia (72-73-69—214) finished 54 holes of golf at 2-under-par in the over 65-year-old Super Senior division. Playing the final 18 on No. 5, Baker won the championship with a par on the first extra hole. Pete Parker of Winston-Salem (76-72-70—218) was third. The best local finish was by Bruce Weir of Pinehurst, tied for 11th (79-78-75—232).
The other close one was in the women's division. Patty Moore of Charlotte and Cynthia Friend of Lexington, Mass., came to the 17th tee on No. 5 all-even. Both birdied 17, but Moore (73-74-72—219) won it with another birdie on 18, while Friend (74-73-73—220) was making a par.
Defending, and three-time champion, Nancy Smith of North Port, Fla., (80-71-73—224) was fourth. Third place went to Karen Ferree of Hilton Head Island, S.C., (77-73-72—222).
In the men's open division, David Brookreson of Huntington Valley, Pa., (70-69-71—210) was under par in each round on Pinehurst Nos. 8, 5 and 2 to finish at 6-under-par in winning by six strokes. Joe Vignati of Bluffton, S.C., (72-72-72—216) and Steven Prout of Dawsonville, Ga., (71-69-77—217) took second and third, respectively. The top local finisher was Ronald Ham Jr., tied for 14th (74-76-77—227).
A total of 173 golfers competed in the three senior amateur divisions.
Vikes Win in Volleyball
A 25-12, 19-25, 25-11 and 25-18 victory over Southern Lee has the Union Pines girls' volleyball team sitting on top of the Cape Fear Valley Conference standings with a 2-0 mark.
The Vikings, 2-2 overall, participated in the first athletic event held in the gym of the new high school. They were again strong at the net, with Kelly Chavis leading the way with 15 kills and five blocks. Also contributing in the hitting department were Carly Shiflett, nine kills, Tiffany Oxendine, 11 kills, and Courtney Sauer, 10 kills. Brianne Hendrick was the service leader with 20 points. Shiflett also had six blocks.
The Vikings return to action on Tuesday in a home conference match against Gray's Creek, beginning with a junior varsity contest at 4:30 p.m.
Patriot Harriers Sweep
The Pinecrest boys' and girls' cross country teams combined to take 10 of the top 11 places in the first Mid-Southeastern Conference meet of the season at Scotland County last Tuesday.
Ann Fields (19:59) and Jordan Rickard (17:19) were the individual winners for the Patriots. Katie Fields, second (20:30), Lauren Bishop, fourth (21:29), Caitlin McArdle, fifth (21:39), and Amanda McKinney, sixth (21:51), scored the other points for the Patriots as they finished well ahead of the second-place Scots and third-place Seventy-First.
Following Rickard in the sweep of the first five spots for Patriot boys were Andy Wacker (17:24), Jonathan Stone (18:03), Jed Black (18:14) and Brett Baggett (18:14).
The Patriots are scheduled to entertain Douglas Byrd, Richmond County and Seventy-First on Tuesday on the Pinecrest High School course. The boys’ race begins at 5 p.m., followed by the girls at 5:45 p.m. Saturday’s scheduled Patriot Run was cancelled.
Mustangs Place Second
The North Moore boys’ and girls’ cross country teams both came in second in a meet held on the course of Yadkin Valley Conference preseason favorite Chatham Central last Tuesday afternoon.
The team results for the boys’ race were Chatham Central 26, North Moore 48 and Jordan-Matthews 55. In the girls’ competition it was Chatham Central 22, North Moore 46 and Jordan-Matthews 60.
Kyle Scott of Chatham Central was the individual winner for the boys (19:01). The top finishers for the Mustangs were Brandon Phillips, third (20:15), Jeremy Forrest, fifth (21:15), Wesley Bell, sixth (21:24), Ben Purvis, 15th (23:58), and Cory Robbins, 19th (25:23).
Jessica McIntyre of Chatham Central won the girls’ race (25:20). Leading the Mustangs were Katie Richardson, fifth (27:19), Johnna Nall, sixth (27:26), Hannah Carricker, eighth (27:51), Clare Monroe, 10th (28:22), and Lauren Lanasdowne, 17th (33:31).
North Moore will be the site of next Tuesday’s conference meet that includes South Davidson and Thomasville.
NM Netters Win
The North Moore volleyball team defeated Chatham Central Thursday to remain undefeated in Yadkin Valley Conference play.
North Moore won the first two games by scores of 25-16 and 25-20. The Bears came back strong, winning the next two games, 25-9 and 25-19. The Mustangs prevailed in the fifth game, winning by a score of 15-7. North Moore’s record is now 3-1(2-0 in conference play).
