Following Fields for the Patriot girls were Ann Fields, third, Lauren Chu, fourth, Amanda McKinney, fifth, and Caitlin McArdle, sixth. Preventing a sweep of the top-five positions was the second-place finish by Hollie Brooks of Scotland County.
No official times were recorded for the girls’ or boys’ races after it was discovered the length of the course was substantially less than the required 5 kilometers.
The Patriots boys swept the top-five places with Tim Jefferson, Jordan Rickard, Jonathan Stone and Chris Jefferson following Williams.
Saturday, the Patriot squads are scheduled to compete at Hagan-Stone Park in Greensboro.
PHS Sweeps Eagles
The Pinecrest volleyball team swept Douglas Byrd 25-17, 25-14 and 25-11 in Fayetteville Tuesday evening.
The win moves the Patriots to 5-1 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference and 11-2 overall. The loss drops the Eagles to 1-4 and 1-10.
The Patriots were scheduled to play at Scotland County on Thursday. Next Tuesday, they entertain Richmond County, beginning with the jayvee contest at 5 p.m. The Patriot junior varsity also swept the Eagles.
Spurs Plan Tryouts
The Sandhills Spurs, a local age 13-and-under AAU/USSSA baseball team, is holding a team tryout for the 2005 season.
The tryout will be held on Saturday, Oct. 2, at the West Pine Middle School baseball field from 4:30 p.m.-7 p.m. The tryout is open to all youth that are 13 or under as of Aug. 1, 2005. All participants should bring their own equipment and be dressed appropriately.
The Spurs are an upper-level baseball team that primarily competes in American Athletic Union (AAU) and United States Sports Specialty Association (USSSA) sanctioned events. The team was organized to promote youth baseball and provide opportunities for young ball players to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to compete at a high level.

Hoop Clinics Set
The Moore County Parks and Recreation Department is offering a series of basketball fundamentals clinics for boys and girls ages 5-12.
The four-week series begins Saturday, Oct. 9, and continues each Saturday through Oct. 30. Members of the Union Pines coaching staff and players will direct the clinics.
The clinic dates are as follows: Oct. 9 — at Union Pines; Oct. 16 — at Carthage Elementary; Oct. 25 — at Carthage Elementary; and Oct. 30 — at Union Pines. The clinics will be held from 9 a.m. until noon each Saturday.
The cost for the clinics is $40 and registration will be held during the first clinic.
The purpose of the clinics is to help area youth develop all basketball skills, including passing, shooting, dribbling, rebounding and defense.

‘Stangs Win in Tennis
The North Moore girls’ tennis team defeated Thomasville on Wednesday at Robbins by a score of 8-1.The Mustangs swept the singles matches and took two of the three doubles.
North Moore improved to 7-6, both overall and in the Yadkin Valley Conference.The Mustangs are currently fifth in the conference standings.
