Freshman Nazario Deloya led the Mustangs with two goals and an assist. The win moved the Mustangs, now 3-3-1 overall, to 3-2 in the Yadkin Valley Conference, while the Rebels fell to 0-3 and 2-5.
After the home team opened the scoring in the 14th minute, the Mustangs tied it 10 minutes later on a goal by Juan Gonzalez that was assisted by Deloya.
In the 28th minute, Deloya carried the ball down the right side and unloaded for an unassisted goal giving the visitors a 2-1 lead at the intermission.
“My guys got better as the game went on,” Mustang coach Michael Shamberger said. “After halftime, it was our game.”
The Rebels drew even, but not for long, with a goal in the 51st minute. The Mustangs quickly responded with Deloya’s second goal in retaking the lead. Then in the 58th minute, Nolberto Hernandez gave the Mustangs an insurance goal on a diving header off a cross by Jordan Phillips.
Phillips and Genaro Catalan shared the goalkeeping, with each recording a pair of saves. The Mustangs took 16 shots in the match to six for their opponent.
“Genaro and Jordan played good games in the field, as well as in goal,” Shamberger said. “This was Nazario’s best game of the season. Juan Gonzalez also played a good game.”
The Mustangs are about to embark on one of their most challenging weeks of the season with conference matches at East Montgomery today (4:30 p.m.) and at Thomasville on Thursday (6:30 p.m.).
