Football Games at Ivan’s Mercy

BY HUNTER CHASE: Sports Editor

The football games scheduled for tonight are still on — maybe.

It all depends on what type of weather the remnants of what is now Tropical Storm Ivan decides to deposit on the area. As of press time Thursday, North Moore still planned to entertain South Davidson, while Pinecrest was planning to travel to Terry Sanford in Fayetteville for a non-conference matchup.

Both games have 7:30 p.m. start times. Union Pines is off this week.

With the biggest threat to the area being heavy rain, Cheryl Brewer, North Moore’s athletic director, said she would know by this morning whether the game would be played tonight.

“We hope to play,” Brewer said Thursday. “But they are calling for as much as four inches of rain to start Friday and continue through Saturday. If that happens then we may very well have to play on Monday.”

The “game plan,” she said, is to take a wait-and-see attitude.

“It will depend on the condition of the field,” she said, “and how wet it gets. We could play Saturday or we could move it to Monday. If we err, it will be on the side of safety.”

That was a theme that Bill Permakoff, Pinecrest athletic director, agreed with.

“It all comes down to the issue of safety,” he said. “You have to consider the safety of the players and the fans.”

Permakoff said that it would be hard to make up games later in the season because most schools don’t have any open dates left. He pointed out that Pinecrest starts its Mid-Southeastern schedule next week with a game against Scotland. If necessary, he would prefer that the game be made up on Saturday, not Monday, if at all possible.

“If you play on a Monday, that makes for a short week to get ready for Scotland,” he said.

The decisions on playing the games will be posted on The Pilot’s Web site when available.
