“What an honor to have some of the finest musicians in the entire United States visit and perform in our community,” says Deborah Mintz, president of the Arts Council of Fayetteville and Cumberland County. “The choice of Fayetteville and Cumberland County underscores our prominence as an arts community.”
The National Symphony Orchestra selected North Carolina for its 2005 American Residency upon the invitation of the North Carolina Arts Council. Fayetteville was selected as the first of five stops during the residency. Other cities are Boone, Greensboro, Raleigh and Greenville.
In addition to the March 9 performance, Leonard Slatkin, National Symphony conductor and the 100 symphony members will perform and teach in schools, colleges and universities and other public venues around Cumberland County as part of the outreach program.
Statewide, there will be a total of eight orchestral concerts, including three concerts for young people. The performances coincide with dozens of educational and outreach activities.
The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County, Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra, Fayetteville State University and Methodist College are co-sponsors of this event.
