Jazz Band to Kick Off Concert Red Springs’ Art Season

One of the South’s premier Dixieland Jazz bands will kick off this year’s season of the Red Springs Arts Council. Hotlanta Dixieland Jazz Band will present a concert on Friday, Oct 17, at 8 p.m. at Flora Macdonald Academy in Red Springs. Tickets for this special event are $7 and will be available at the door.

Arts Council President John Bowman says, “It has been nearly five years since we have offered our audience a performance of Dixieland Jazz. This band is on tour from Atlanta and boy, are they hot. We hope to fill the house for what will surely be a crowd pleasing evening of classic Dixieland Jazz. Our nearly 100-year-old auditorium in the old Flora Macdonald College will be the perfect space to hear this music.

“Hotlanta takes you back to New Orleans during the early decades of the 20th century. You’ll experience every bit of the joy, energy and humor of that early American Jazz called Dixieland. Songs for Fats Waller, Hoagy Carmichael, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, plus many old favorites like “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “Hard Hearted Hannah,” and “When the Saints Go Marchin’ In” are all part of Hotlanta’s musical treat.”

The audience will have the opportunity to request songs from a play list of nearly 90 hits.

The concert is supported by a Grassroots Arts Grant from the North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency. For additional information, call 910-843-2427.
