Fairway Notebook: Foxy Niners Play Tourney

Foxfire: The Foxy Niners played a captain’s choice game on the front nine of the West Course.

Winners were Shirley Kirschner, Helen Munro and Betsy Wands with 45. In second place, with 46, were Jean McEntee, Sandy Williams and Helen Ferency, with each player alternating as the fourth.

Beacon Ridge: The Eighteen-Hole Ladies played best net nine holes of 18 holes Aug. 26. Winners were:

First flight — Ann Nueslein 28, Pat Allen 30 (tie), Marion Goercke (tie), Marilyn Dumbleton 31 (tie), Clarice Moreau 31 (tie) and Jeanne Halpin 31 (tie).

Second flight — Marlene Price 26, Barbara Card 28, Betty Buechel 30.

Third flight — Linda Dunning 24 (tie), Kathleen Deignan 24 (tie), Lanny Eisenberger 26, Joan Eberly 27 (tie), Jean Helmstetter 27 (tie).

On Sept. 2, the Eighteen-Hole Ladies played for the Beacon Cup, which is a low-net event. Linda Dunning won, with a net score of 67. Flight winners were:

First flight — Lavonne Hurd 71, Betsy Brezinski 74, Marilyn Dumbleton 78 (tie), Mary Lois Teyssier 78 (tie), Pat Mark 78 (tie).

Second flight — Marlene Price 71, Betty Buechel 74 (tie), Sandy Easter 74 (tie), Donna Fellows 81.

Third flight — Marily Holzerland 70, Lois Dole 73, Joan Eberly 75.

Knollwood: Twenty-nine Sandblasters played a captain’s choice game. Billy Elkins, Walt Scheyett, Al High and Earl Huggins finished first with 31. John Mannion, Dick Madeira, Will Downing and a blind draw were second with 32. Wallace Gourley, Paul Sanger, Clark Russell and Bill Park were third on a match of cards at 34.

Twenty-seven Sandblasters played a two-man best-ball tournament Aug. 26. John Wunderlin and Cheat Bearden were first on a match of cards with 27. Carl Arnett and Carl Leichtnam were second. Walt Scheyett and Tom Brosnahan were third on a match of cards at 28.

Tom Brosnahan had the low gross score, 41; and the low net, 30. He birdied No. 8. Leichtnam birdied No. 3.

Midland: Rick Stone won the Men’s Golf Association nine-hole Skins Game with two skins.

Overall winners in an 18-hole Men’s Golf Association two-best-balls-of-four Nassau were Fred Cirule, Charles Cook, Bob Alcorn and Paul Aschmetat with 111.

Al High, Walter Scheyett, Dick Baird and John Goodfellow won the front nine with 53.

Bill Nelson, Archie Morgan, Doug Toler and a blind draw won the back nine with 58.

Art Gula had the lowgross score, 76. Al High had the low net, 62.

Pinehurst: Seventy-nine members of the Birdies played Course No. 6 on Aug. 26. The game was best-ball, with two-best-balls on Par-3s, at 95 percent of handicap with balanced handicaps. Dee Rintz, Barbara Moore, Rose Silvestrone and Jackie Tucker were first with 69. Anne Culwick, Rita Clayton, Ellie Ray and Irene Corbin were second on a match of cards at 70. Tee Noggle, Pearl Campbell, Barb Wolfe and Marjorie Frost were third.

Cathy Renner, Shirley Potter, Kathee Sladkus and Evelyn Bednarz were fourth on a three-way match of cards at 71. Nathalie Thomas, Anne Moore, Dolores Morrow and Jacque Weston were fifth. Shirley Kronbach, Marilyn Gordon, Vera Pelekoudas and Louise Weiss were sixth.

Birdies were made by Jackie Tucker (2), Anne Burton, Jacque Weston, Louise Weiss, Trish Christina, Mary Barbero, Diane Ghekas and Olive Muiter.

Ninety-two members of the Birdies played Course No. 5 on Sept. 3. The game was best-ball on odd holes and two-best-balls on even holes, at 94 percent of handicap with semi-matched handicaps. Winners were:

Class AA/BB — Susan Smith, Betsy Nazario, Dayne Sousa and Kathleen Richardson 97 (match of cards); Roberta Kachel, Doris Richardson, Helen Delise and Karen Plankar 97 (match of cards); Rita Clayton, Josie Bunting, Nancy Brooks and Rose Silvestrone 99 (match of cards); Marilyn Gordon, Judy Silver, Sara Sutton and Margaret Van Riper 99 (match of cards).

Class CC/DD — Diane Ghekas, Ellie Ray, Vera Miller and Lois Moore 97; Jacque Weston, Margaret Cropley, Marie Humber and Elizabeth Morgan 98; Judy Sedivy, Pat Wallace, Darlene Skinner and Allison Murphy 101 (match of cards); Lynn Rieger, Rose Anderson, Ruth Ertel and Jo Rolman 101 (match of cards).

Twenty-eight Silver Foils played a better-ball, low gross/low net tournament Tuesday, Sept. 2. Winners were:

Low gross — Sis Liston and Jean Funderburg, on a match of cards at 81 with Lynne Heilman and Dave Jadios; Judy Sanders and Mary Wardrop 88.

Low net — Austin White and Jane Forsythia in a match of cards at 67 with Katie Ryan and Pat Lamb; Lotto Rhodes and Joan Jasper 68 (match of cards).

The Chippers played a game of par-4s with 50 percent of handicap on Course No. 6 on Sept. 4. Jane Stanton was first with a 20 (match of cards). Stella Butters was second with 20 (match of cards). Bettie Wilson was third with a 21 (match of cards) and Carol Nevins was fourth with a 21 (match of cards).

The Women’s Golf Association played one best ball of partners on Course No. 1 on Sept. 5 with 90 teams.

Peg Kirkpatrick and Bette Rycroft won first place with a 61. Jackie Nyberg and Janis Sholtis were second at 62. Dee Bilodeau and Dian Moore were third with a 63 (match of cards). Lottie Rhoads and Ilse Roberts were fourth at 63 (match of cards); Nan Woods and Linda Mott, fifth with 63 (match of cards); Sue Ferretti and Jeanette Surmonte, sixth with a 64 (match of cards); Shirley Pherson and Susan Lagraff, seventh with a 64 (match of cards); Kathy Mondock and Donna Bartrip, eighth with a 64 (match of cards); Betsy Nazario and Kay McGowen, ninth with a 64 (match of cards);
