Both the boys’ and girls’ teams had perfect 15 scores, including Tuesday’s quad meet at Scotland. Both Pinecrest teams also carry perfect 13-0 records this season.
For the cross country neophyte, explaining scoring is a simple task. Where ever the top-five runners for each school finish, that is how many points scored. The lowest total wins. So perfection is reached when the top five finishers all come from the same school. Score it this way – one point for first, two points for second, three points for third and so on down the line.
In the boys’ meet at Scotland, second place went to Scotland with 63 points, third to Richmond with 111 points and Hoke finished fourth with 175 points. In the girls’ meet, Scotland finished second with 42 points, Richmond third with 135 points and Hoke did not score.
Jason Lee led the way for the boys, while Rebekah Bishop did the same for the girls. Lee finished in 16 minutes, 11 seconds to take top honors for the boys, while Bishop crossed the finish line in 20:27 to take first in the girls’ race.
Following Lee across the finish line were Odell White in 16:36, Grant Kershner in 16:38, Doug Andrew in 16:56 and Jeff Garrison grabbed the fifth spot in a time of 18:03.
Auburn Staple continued the parade of Pinecrest harriers by finishing in sixth in a time of 19:10, the same time as Patriot Andrew Garner recorded in finishing seventh.
Pinecrest also had a junior varsity team running in the meet, and they finished with 72 points.
Mario Messana was the top finisher for the jayvees, finishing in eighth. The other jayvee scores were provided by Jeff Morrison in 11th, Jake McKenzie in 13th, Chris Kunik in 18th, and Matt Lane in 21st.
There were a total of 61 runners in the boys’ meet.
Following Bishop across the finish line in the girls’ race were fellow Patriots Helen Kenworthy in second, Kassia Kowalick in third, Kateri Bruno in fouth and Jessi Star in fifth place. Hallie Benton finished in ninth place for the Patriots, while Debbi Miller finished in 13th.
The girls also had a junior varsity team entered and it collected 83 points. The top runners for the jayvees were Julia Byron in 14th, Sam Dixon in 16th, Amanda Gilbert in 17th, Allison Auman in 18th, Lauren Broderick in 19th, Heather Reaves in 27th and Raven Bruno in 29th.
Last week, the Patriots pulled the same perfect coup when they took both sides of a quad meet held at Pinecrest. In the boys’ meet, Pinecrest was followed by Jack Britt with 67 points, Scotland with 74 points and Seventy-First with 83 points.
Once again, Lee led the way for the Patriots finishing first in a time of 18:23. The next five Pinecrest runners all finished one second behind each other. Staples came in second in a time of 18:24, White third in 18:25, Karshner fourth in 18:26, Andrews fifth in 18:27 and Garrison sixth in 18:28. Garner came in seventh in the race in a time of 18:38.
On the girls’ side everyone was chasing Bishop. She came in first in a time of 21:30. She was followed by Kenworthy in a time of 22:42, Emily Riggs third in a time of 23:19, Kateri Bruno fourth in a time of 23:21 and Kowalick fifth in a time of 23:23.
Jessi Star finished eighth in a time of 24:19, while Byron claimed 13th spot for the Patriots.
Scotland finished in second place in the girls’ race with 57 points, Jack Britt third with 64 points, while Seventy-First did not record a score.
