The council voted during a special called meeting Aug. 29 to table action on bids for the contract until it could poll residents on their preferences.
The informal poll will be carried out through the Village Topics newsletter, which is scheduled to be delivered to homes in Whispering Pines by the end of September.
Here’s the catch: Village Council members want to hear from residents prior to their Oct. 3 work session.
The village paid $206,600 for side-door garbage collection last year. This year it is paying a yearly rate of $240,543 for curbside collection. The contractor is Wendell Roberson, who has served the village for a number of years.
The change to curbside collection came July 1. Garbage is picked up twice a week, yard trash once a week.
The Village Council voted in July to put out the service for bids. Bids were opened Aug. 16.
An article about the Aug. 29 public hearing on the garbage issue, published in the Friday, Aug. 31, edition of The Pilot, gave an incorrect summary of the bids. The bids for curbside collection on the same schedule as is now being carried out were:
n BFI $163,228.
n Waste Management $221,119.
n Anthony Trash $185,183.
n Republic $185,351.
The bids for side-door collection on the same schedule as last year were:
n BFI $189,364.
n Waste Management $279,141.
n Anthony Trash $263,590.
n Republic $303,089.
The bid totals include tipping fees and insurance.
