VA Announces Update to Veterans Health Benefits

The Department of Veterans Affairs has announced an update to the Veterans Health Care Benefits program, which provides access to VA medical centers for honorably discharged veterans.

Veterans can still enroll in the VA health care system and become eligible not only for medical care but also for prescription drugs from the VA pharmacy.

Enrollment is available through the Moore County Veterans Office (947-3257) or the VA Medical Center Eligibility Office at 2300 Ramsey St., Fayetteville 28327. Once enrolled, each veteran is assigned to a primary care team or clinic.

The Moore County Veterans Office has supplied these answers for frequently asked questions:

n What documents do I need to bring to enrollment? Your discharge, Medicare card, other health insurance information, spouse’s birth date and Social Security number and date of marriage.

n What is the cost? Outpatient visits are $50.80 each, which will be billed to your health insurance if you are insured.

n What is the prescription co-payment? Each 30-day supply cost $7. Co-payment was increased from $2 to $7 effective Sept. 1.

n Is there an income level below which I do not pay a co-payment? Yes, $9,304 for a single veteran and $12,186 for a married veteran.

nOnce I am enrolled, how do I access the VA Health Care System? The first time you go to the VA hospital without an appointment, check in at the emergency room and be seen by one of the physicians. He will examine you and refer you to a clinic for follow-up. Any further treatment will be under the supervision of your clinic doctor or as he refers you to specialists.

n Can I have a non-VA prescription filled at the VA pharmacy? No, all prescriptions must come from a VA physician.

n How often does the VA require me to be checked by their physician? Every 90 days on an average in order to update your prescriptions.

n If my insurance doesn’t pay the entire VA bill, will I get a bill? Only for the co-payment.
