Golf Bag: CCNC Hosts Adams Memorial

BY HOWARD WARD: Golf Writer

It has been three years since the tragic death of legendary golf professional Buck Adams. But the memory of the man who was Mr. Country Club of North Carolina lingers on in the minds of the legion of friends and associates whose lives he touched.

The third annual Buck Adams Memorial Pro-Am will be held at CCNC on Monday, Sept. 17, and a full field of 125 will gather to pay respects, relive old memories and share stories of the man many considered the consummate professional.

Those who knew Adams personally will understand that he would probably have been embarrassed by the show of emotion and the fuss being made over him. But they also know that it would have made him proud to realize that he was appreciated so highly.

Among those attending are three members of the PGA Senior Tour, Jim Ferree, Miller Barber and DeWitt Weaver.

Ferree is a native of Aberdeen and, like Barber and Weaver, was a close friend of Adams.

The occasion is special to Weaver in other ways. This is the 30th anniversary of his winning the U.S. Match Play Championship held at CCNC in 1971. Weaver defeated Phil Rodgers in the finals.

Jeff Dotson, who was chosen to replace Adams upon his retirement from CCNC, has been instrumental in the organization of the event to honor his mentor.

“The purpose is to raise money for the Buck Adams Charitable Funds Foundation,” Dotson said. “This fund provides money for assisting people to pursue careers in the golf business. And it also provides money for medical research at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.”

That aspect would certainly please Adams, who attended UNC and maintained a close relationship with the university and administrators as well as coaches of the various athletic teams.

“This is also a great opportunity for us to honor Buck’s memory for the impact he had on the golfing world in the Carolinas,” Dotson said. “It’s a chance for guys such as me who worked for him to get together and reminisce a little.”

Golden Corral and BB&T are major sponsors of the invitational pro-am.

National Shows Off: National Golf Club will showcase its facilities and real estate offerings during a special couples event in November.

“Picture Yourself at National” is a two-night, three-day couples outing that takes place Nov. 7-9. The goal is to introduce the gated community and signature Jack Nicklaus golf course to future members and residents.

“National is more than just a golf course, it’s a lifestyle,” said Robin McClellan, membership director. “We want people to take advantage of that lifestyle, and once people see our community, they love it.”

National’s amenities include the par-72 championship golf course, a recently renovated 32,000-square-foot clubhouse, a junior Olympic-sized pool, and a tennis and swim facility.

Northgate Homes recently purchased 126 homesites for development and has two models to tour, with three more under construction. A wide range of social and golf memberships are also available at the club.

The couples event includes two nights in on-site cottages and villas, a welcome reception hosted by Northgate Homes, one round of golf, a gourmet dinner, continental breakfast, a tour of the village and Sandhills area and a special real estate presentation.

Total cost for the event is $499 per couple, and space is limited
