North Moore Breaks Through
BY GEORGE LAWTHER: Special to The Pilot
The North Moore High School football team finally got to play South Stanly High School on Tuesday night after two postponements due to the weather. The Mustangs got their first win of the season by defeating the Rebels 34-14. The game was played at Robbins.
Antwain McCrimmon put on a show for the Mustang faithful by having a hand in producing 22 points. McCrimmon had three touchdown tosses with two going to Webster Davis and one to Timmy McCrimmon. He also hit Jason Brower with a two-point conversion pass and ran in a two-point conversion on his own.
Jared Bumpers and Jason Morgan provided the other two Mustang scores. Bumpers had a one-yard touchdown run, while Morgan sprinted 30 yards to score the last points of the game.
It didn’t take long for the Mustangs to provide the home crowd with some excitement in a game that featured two teams looking for their first win of the season.
Davis brought the crowd to its feet at the beginning of the game by returning the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. However, a clipping penalty nullified the score, and the ball was brought back to the North Moore 20-yard line.
Jason Morgan and Jared Bumpers advanced the ball to the 49, but the Mustangs were penalized for holding and the offensive drive broke down. The Mustangs were forced to punt.
Shun Gains took the punt on his own 47 and ran it all the way back for the Rebels’ first touchdown with 8:19 remaining in the first quarter. Gains’ try for the extra point was wide, and South Stanly led 6-0.
North Moore scored its first touchdown at the beginning of the second quarter, as the Mustangs had possession on the Rebels’ six-yard line, first and goal. Morgan carried the ball to the one on the first play, and Bumpers scored on the next play. The try for a two-point conversion failed, and the score was tied, 6-6.
The Mustangs’ second touchdown came late in the second quarter after North Moore had recovered a Rebel fumble on the its own 45. On the first play Antwain McCrimmon completed a pass to Timmy McCrimmon to the South Stanly 31-yard line. On the next play McCrimmon passed to Davis for the touchdown, and then passed to Jason Brower for the two-point conversion, giving North Moore a 14-6 lead.
After the kickoff, the Mustang defense held and North Moore took over on the Rebels’ 29-yard line. Morgan ran the ball to the 20, and on second-and-one, Antwain McCrimmon passed to Timmy McCrimmon for the Mustangs’ third touchdown. The try for a two-point conversion failed, and the half ended with the score North Moore 20, South Stanly 6.
The Rebels scored their second touchdown late in the third quarter, after a facemask penalty and a personal foul penalty against the Mustangs gave South Stanly the ball on the North Moore one-yard line. Kiko Brown carried the ball in for the touchdown, and Gains added the two-point conversion a moment later, making the score 20-14 in the Mustangs’ favor.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Mustang team ran over to its bench, but was sent back on to the field. After the ball was snapped, McCrimmon passed to his “lonesome end” Davis, who took the ball down the sideline for another Mustang score. Antwain McCrimmon then ran for the two-point conversion, and the score was Mustangs 28, Rebels 14.
North Moore scored again with 1:50 remaining in the game, as Morgan ran the ball into the end zone from the Rebels’ 30-yard line. The try for a two-point conversion failed, and the game ended with the score North Moore 34, South Stanly 14.
The Mustangs’ record improved to 1-4, while the Rebels record is 0-5 for the season. North Moore plays at East Montgomery on Friday.
