Mosquito Misinformation

The mosquito season has arrived with little local concern for the West Nile virus.

A recent survey in Whispering Pines revealed mosquito larvae but no adult mosquitos. I guess the larvae were the result of some evolutionary miracle. It was also stated that the virus was spread by tiger mosquitos, which are active during the daytime. Therefore the situation required daytime fogging, which was ineffective and possibly harmful.

The facts are that the West Nile virus is spread by 36 species of mosquitos. Fogging is for the purpose of destroying larvae as well as the mosquitos/ Therefore it can be used effectively in the evening. The suggestions to stay in at dawn and dusk and to wear long sleeves and trousers in an area of 90 degree-plus temperatures are ludicrous. If the experts can’t find adult mosquitos, I invite them to my yard wearing short sleeves. I might add that for the first 10 years I lived here, the village did fog and there wasn’t a problem.

In conclusion, we have a potential virus problem that can result in permanent paralysis and death, and we will remain inactive until cases develop. Kind of like the railroad won’t put up crossing gates until there are a number of deaths at the crossing.
