A Mother Remembers Columnist’s Heroism
I enjoyed Tom Bryant’s columns on Pinebluff Lake. His memories are always so vivid and enjoyable.
He is so modest and would never tell about his experience with saving the life of a friend in that lake. Tom was a Boy Scout and always aware of what he was taught. A boyhood friend, Frank Gattis, was swimming from the pier to the dam at the Pinebluff Lake, all deep water in that area. He got halfway to the dam and started to panic. He floundered about and started to go under when Tom saw he was in trouble. Tom went to his rescue and was immediately dragged down by Frank in his panic.
Tom’s Scout swimming training took over, and he was able to get loose from Frank and carried him safely to shallow water. The emergency was over. I was a spectator there that day many years ago, holding my breath.
You see, I am his mother.
