In August 1999, I began work at the Harnett County District Attorney’s Office and commuted from Moore County to Lillington each weekday. This commute carried me through the area of Union Pines High School. I have previously lived in Fayetteville and Greenville and have encountered my fair share of school traffic, but never had I seen such disarray as the traffic at Union Pines. For someone like me, who was trying to turn left off of the Farm Life School Road onto Union Church Road, it was a nightmare.
One morning, I pulled out only to avoid an accident by mere feet. Upon arriving at work that morning, I called the Moore County Sheriff’s Department and asked to speak to the sheriff. I was told that the sheriff was not in, but I could speak with Mr. Carter. I explained the situation to Mr. Carter and asked about the possibility of a deputy directing the morning school traffic. Mr. Carter stated he understood my frustration and he would see what he could do.
I hung up thinking to myself that I had just wasted my time. Imagine my surprise when the next day there was a deputy out directing the school traffic. A deputy continued to be there throughout the school year. I have since learned that the sheriff’s department has put even more deputies for traffic out at Union Pines as well as at New Century Middle School.
I applaud Lane Carter for not only taking time to listen to what I had to say but getting something done about it. Mr. Carter, you have earned my support and my vote.
