The news article on Southern Pines native Harry Jones’ selection to serve as county manager by the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners was good, and cause for congratulations and best wishes from the Sandhills.

Harry rightfully deserves the success he has earned through hard work, determination and refusing to accept anything less than his best effort in every challenge he faced. He represents us well and is one of the best role models for our young people as they prepare for future leadership.

I admired him as a young athlete playing baseball and football in our local schools when I was broadcasting local sports. He earned degrees at UNC Chapel Hill, took advantage of available opportunities and focused his energies on achieving goals that would have seemed impossible earlier in his life.

Earning the position of county manager of our most populated, industrialized, financially anchored county in the region is an achievement we applaud and hopefully encourage our youth to try and emulate.

Our community shares the pride of his mom, Frances and his wife Becky and all of his family and friends. We wish him the best.
