Humane Society Covered Fairly

As a member of the Board of Directors of Moore Humane Society (MHS), I appreciate and am grateful to Sarah Lindau for her unbiased and well-written article published on Nov. 14.

The article fairly and accurately stated the facts covering the MHS quasi-judicial hearing for a conditional use permit before the Southern Pines Planning Board on Nov. 13.

Also, the cartoon that appeared in the Opinion section of The Pilot on Friday, Nov. 16, cleverly depicted MHS as the old, soft, fluffy guy up against the tough and powerful wolf-like pooch as the unnamed “Opposition.”

I have never spoken directly to the officers of Sandhills Community College or the O’Neal School. Nor have I ever spoken to the residents of Forest Creek. However, I know they do not oppose MHS’s mission statement which is “to protect and improve the welfare of animals by fostering compassion, responsibility and respect for all animals through education, legislative activism, and aggressive spay/neuter and adoption programs.”

Unfortunately, they oppose the MHS goal to build a new facility because it will be in the vicinity of their schools and residences. A new Humane Society state-of-the-art building will provide the opportunity for MHS, SCC and O’Neal to work closely together to develop programs that serve the children, adults and animals of Moore County. MHS President Corky O’Connor has invited representatives of SCC, the O’Neal School and Forest Creek to meet with MHS to work through their concerns. We continue to extend that invitation.

I would also like to thank those who appeared at the Southern Pines hearing in support of Moore Humane Society. Your participation was greatly appreciated and your continued support is invaluable. Thank you!
