Black Parents Care About Children’s Education

On April 16, you published an article titled “Pinecrest High School Class Examines Racial Inequality.” The African-American literature class disclosed statistics that, according to the study, indicate racial inequality between black and white students. It states that black students choose not to take the most difficult classes, parents are apathetic, minority communities do not support their youth and stereotypes are associated with black students.

My husband and I are the parents of three children who attend three different schools in the Moore County School District. My oldest is at Pinecrest. Since my children have been in school, I have spent more time at one of the Moore County schools than at any other activity. My children come first and their education is paramount to their success in this world. I am not alone; there are many parents who follow the same edict. It’s just that it’s not recorded.

My church, First Missionary Baptist in Southern Pines, has had an after school tutoring program for many years, and recently, the superintendent presented an award to the church for its success in improving reading skills and raising end-of-grade test scores. The church recognizes the children for high achievement and gives scholarships every year.

I would like to see a follow-up article that enlightens the community on the fact that black parents do care, different community organizations and black churches do offer scholarships, and tutorial programs are available. I believe that the community as a whole will fight to remove any racial inequality that exists.
