The People’s Water

I read in the April 30 edition of The Pilot that the county commissioners have agreed to sell the water system serving Pinehurst to the village. I believe that this is a big mistake. I am not an engineer and don’t really know anything about the aquifer or streams from which the people of Moore County get their water.

The towns do not own the water. The water is owned by residents of Moore County. The towns have enough people to tax to be able to build the necessary pumping stations to remove the water from the ground. None of the towns put sufficient water into the aquifer or streams equal to what they remove. The land making up Moore County puts the water into the aquifer and streams. Therefore, Moore County should be the sole owner of any water system taking water from the aquifer or streams.

This also means that Moore County must be responsible for maintaining all systems in the county and ensuring that its citizens have ample good, clean water. I hope that something can be done to correct this mistake before it is too late.
