A Christmas Farewell

Dear Daddy,

Early morning on Nov. 19, you unexpectedly went to heaven. Mommy is really sad. Mommy came home from the hospital with Aunt Jacq and called Mr. and Mrs. Grantham. Then she told Grandma that you went to heaven. Daddy, she cried so hard.

Then Mommy came upstairs and told me first. Then Mrs. Grantham came and sat with me. Mommy then told Michael and Aunt Jacq sat with him. Then Mommy told Pat. Hhe cried and said that you had the best jokes. Then we all got onto your bed with Mommy and talked about what happened and how hard it was going to be because we were going to have a wake and a funeral.

Daddy, it was amazing to see all your friends come to the house to give us food, presents and hugs. The kitchen was covered with food. I don't know how Mommy is going to be able to thank everyone, she is never going to finish. It feels like Mommy's been writing forever.

Can you believe that all our aunts, uncles and cousins came down? Everybody loved the house and how you built it.

By the way, Dad, at my volleyball game, the day you died, we beat Southern Middle. I wish you were there to see the game. I got all my serves over every time. Anyway, this is so hard on Mommy. I don't know how she is going to do Christmas shopping for everyone.

We went to the Bruce Springsteen concert on Dec. 8. Can you believe that your expensive tickets got us only one row from the last? Michael and I missed you so much there. We had to have Aunt Marianne and Uncle Jeff take us home. The first song was "The Rising" and reminded us so much of you driving around in your jeep listening to the CD.

There is one more thing I wanted to tell you. The urn Mommy picked out for you wasn't big enough, so Michael, Patrick and I got to pick out our own keepsake urns that come in little heart-shaped velvet boxes.

Dad, you should have stayed for Christmas! We all miss you so much! I wish you were here right now! It's not fair it had to be you, I think God messed up but I know you are in a better place.

I love you.
