Someone Should Deal Bouser More Cards
For the past few years, I have suspected that Steve Bouser was not playing with a full deck, but his latest column on the Dec. 2 Opinion page of The Pilot regarding the movie "8 Mile" certainly proved beyond any doubt that there are a few cards missing.
Right off the bat, Bouser says that "8 Mile," starring Eminem, was unrelievedly depressing, decadent, violent, profane and hate-filled. He further says that the movie is rated "R" for violence, sex and extreme, non-stop profanity, and that Eminem is perhaps considered by others as the most hated young white man in America. I certainly agree with all of the above.
However, Bouser then goes on to state that although he is offended by its language, its imagery and its value system, he nevertheless has appreciation for the artistry and seriousness of purpose. He further states that it's worth seeing, it's a good movie, and it’s worth taking your teen-ager to.
Can Bouser be possibly be serious, or has he completely lost it? Even being the liberal that he is doesn't excuse his suggestion that we should take our children to see this piece of trash. Does he think that these children will only be interested in the artistry, craftmanship and cinematic storytelling?
Bouser states that the barbarians are not just at the gates but are already inside. You are absolutely right, Mr. Bouser, and with thinking like yours, you could be one of them.

We have designated Mr. Fairbanks’ offering as a Lighthouse Letter because we consider it exceptionally well crafted. The Pilot doesn’t necessarily agree with the opinions expressed in Lighthouse Letters. |
