THE PILOT LIGHT: Libertarians On Ballot

Both incumbent state representatives whose new legislative districts include Moore County have opposition on the Nov. 5 general election ballot.

Libertarian Todd Unkefer of Southern Pines is running against state Rep. Richard Morgan, the Republican whose district covers most of Moore County.

Rep. Leslie Cox, a Sanford Democrat, has two opponents, Republican John Sauls and Libertarian Mark Jackson, both of Sanford.

A Libertarian candidate will also appear on the state Senate ballot. Jonathan Lubecky of Sanford has filed for Senate District 22, where Pinehurst Republican Harris Blake and Sanford Democrat Jimmy L. Love are vying for the seat.

CANDIDATES — The Libertarian candidates are among about 150 Libertarians running for public office across North Carolina.

Most candidates filed as a group with the State Board of Elections in Raleigh in June. As a new and small party in North Carolina, the Libertarians chose their candidates at a convention, rather than through primaries.

About 61 Libertarians are registered to vote in Moore County.

One Libertarian, Jason Camp of Southern Pines, is a candidate for the nonpartisan Moore County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors. Because this election is nonpartisan, his name will not appear on the ballot under the party label.

When the new legislative districts go into effect next year, Moore County will have two House districts, the 52nd, which encompasses 19½ of the 23 precincts, and the 51st, encompassing all of Lee County, a few Harnett County precincts and the remaining three and a half precincts in Moore. Morgan and Unkefer live in the 52nd District, Cox, Sauls and Jackson in the 51st.

Senate District 22 is also new, encompassing all of Moore and Lee counties and some Harnett County precincts.

FORUM — The League of Women Voters is working out final details on the candidates’ forum scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 7 until 9:30 p.m. in Owens Auditorium on the campus of Sandhills Community College.

As many as 23 candidates may participate, according to Kay Hodge, who is handling invitations for the forum. Candidates range from Board of Education and Soil and Water Conservation Board, both nonpartisan, to legislative and judicial races.

SCHROEDER — Retired Army Lt. Gen. Daniel Schroeder will address the Oct. 10 meeting of the Moore County Republican Men’s Club.

He will talk about his experiences on active duty and is also expected to address the situation in Iraq.

Schroeder, who lives in Vass, serves on the Elizabeth Dole for Senate advisory committee for military affairs.

The Republican men will meet at 11:30 a.m. for lunch at Country Club of North Carolina. Seating is by reservation only. More information is available by calling 295-4291.

TRANSPORTATION — The next meeting of the Countywide Surface Transportation Committee has been scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Village Assembly Hall in Pinehurst.

Craig Young, the N.C. Department of Transportation design engineer for the N.C. 211 widening project, will discuss design concepts with the committee.

The committee also plans to hold a public input meeting on Nov. 19 in Room 134 of Kennedy Hall at Sandhills Community College. Hours will be from 3 until 7 p.m.
