THE PILOT LIGHT: Revaluation On Agenda

At a work session this afternoon, the Moore County Board of Commissioners will hear a presentation on the property revaluation process and will discuss the 2002-03 budget.

The board will convene at 4:30 for the work session, then will reconvene at 6 p.m. for the regular meeting.

The county must make a budget adjustment to account for $3 million in state reimbursements withheld because of the state’s financial crisis.

As part of the regular agenda, the commissioners will consider rescission of a resolution adopted in September authorizing the upgrade of the water line connecting the town of Robbins with the Montgomery County water system. The county has since learned that loopholes in funding provisions would make it costly or too difficult to participate at this time. The county’s interest in the upgrade lies in plans for future development of a West Moore Water District.

6th DISTRICT — The 6th District Republican Executive Committee, chaired by Elizabeth Kelly of Southern Pines, convened Saturday at the Carolina Hotel in Pinehurst.

Kelly says district Republicans used the occasion for a combined business meeting and Christmas luncheon.

District Republicans like Moore County for meetings. In the past they have gathered in both Pinehurst and Southern Pines.

SEVEN ADDED – The Moore County Republican Executive Committee added seven new members to its numbers at a meeting last week.

Kelly, who also chairs the county committee, says the committee voted unanimously to elect these new at-large members: Dr. Carson Cox of Southern Pines, Pinehurst Councilwoman Lorraine Tweed, Vickie Hargrove Mehta of Southern Pines, Nancy Seawell of Eagle Springs, Charles Horne of Carthage and Bill Garner, a former school board member.

The membership also includes three new ex-officio members as a result of the general election. State Sen. -elect Harris Blake of Pinehurst, who was already a committee member, was shifted to ex-officio status. The other ex-officio members are County Commissioner Virginia W. Saunders and Sheriff Lane Carter.

The Moore County Executive Committee allows ex-officio members to vote.

COBLE — Congressman Howard Coble is making dozens of holiday appearances throughout the 6th District this season.

However, he took time out for a visit to Pinehurst Thursday, when he was the speaker for a luncheon meeting of the Moore County Republican Men’s Club. The meeting was held at Country Club of North Carolina.

Also on Thursday, he participated in the conference call with Gov. Mike Easley to discuss disaster relief for North Carolina in the wake of a severe ice storm that left hundreds of thousands of people without power for several days.

Holiday luncheons, receptions and dinners and Christmas parades have also been high on Coble’s schedule. He rode in Christmas parades in Asheboro Friday night, in Ramseur Saturday morning and Gibsonville Saturday afternoon.

EDWARDS — A report issued last week by Senate and House intelligence committees recommends that Congress promptly consider creation of a new domestic intelligence agency, a proposal U.S. Sen. John Edwards first advanced in an Oct. 7 speech.

Edwards said the new agency should replace FBI units that have been blamed for intelligence failures before the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

“The FBI is clearly broken and we can accept no further delay in the effort to fix it,” Edwards said. “I am pleased the committees adopted my amendment to ensure that Congress begins work immediately.”

A draft version of the report had said Congress should delay the issue for at least one year while the Bush administration studied the problem. An amendment offered by Edwards, which was made part of the final report, deleted that provision and replaced it with a call for prompt consideration of the proposal.

Edwards, a former Robbins resident, is a member of the Senate Intelligence and Judiciary committees.
