Stillwell Joins Tourism Board

Peter Stillwell, vice president of marketing for Pinehurst Inc., has been named an interim member of the Convention and Visitors Bureau board.

He succeeds Scott Brewton, who has been transferred to Daufuskie Island Resort as general manager.

The Moore County Board of Commissioners followed the recommendation of Pat Corso, Pinehurst Resort chief operating officer, in making the appointment at the Aug. 21 meeting. At least one slot on the tourism board is reserved for a Resort representative.

At the same meeting, the commissioners also reappointed J.T. Cotner of Aberdeen to a four-year term on the Moore County Airport Authority.

In other action, the commissioners named Nancy Roy, county planning director, to serve as their voting member on the Regional Land Use Advisory Commission, the body representing nine counties surrounding Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base.

ARMEY — U.S. House Majority Leader Dick Armey inserted some humor into a brief press conference Thursday.

Asked if he was making other stops in North Carolina, the prominent Texas Republican paused and pondered, then admitted that he checks out the place he’s visiting next after he gets back on the plane.

Armey, who landed at the Moore County Airport Thursday morning, addressed a rally supporting state Rep. Richard Morgan, the county’s Republican representative in the state House and House minority leader.

Armey said that when he returns to the plane, he checks the schedule, then studies up on the next stop.

He knew that he was in Moore County, North Carolina, but he had to check his schedule to determine that his next stop was in South Carolina.

“I stop and talk, then run for the border,” he said. “It’s a time-honored tradition.”

REFORM — Pat Buchanan is the Reform Party candidate whose name will appear on North Carolina’s general election ballot in November.

On a 3-1 vote Thursday, the state Board of Elections picked Buchanan over John Hagelin, who was the nominee of the Ross Perot wing of the Reform Party.

The Reform Party, founded by Perot, dissolved into what was described as two party conventions when it held its national convention in San Diego two weeks ago.

Delegates could not agree on which faction was authorized to hold the convention, so the two factions met separately.

The decision came just in time for a Sept. 1 deadline to get ballots approved for printing.

Incidentally, the Moore County Board of Elections reports that registration books will close on Oct. 13 for unregistered people wishing to vote on Nov. 7.

RANDOLPH — Randolph County Democrats will kick off Campaign 2000 with an open house Thursday, Sept. 7, from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. at their new headquarters, 731 S. Fayetteville St., Asheboro.

Their headquarters will be open for office hours beginning Sept. 5.

ABERDEEN — The Aberdeen Board of Commissioners will hold a work session Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Town Hall.

Items on the agenda for discussion include bid awards for a major addition to the Town Hall, and sewer service to the proposed new “golf village” on N.C. 5.
