 Sandhills Remains A Safe Campus
The Thursday stabbing of a student at Sandhills Community College sent shock waves through the campus and Moore County. But students, faculty members, administrators and staffers at SCC can rest assured that Sandhills is a safe place for them and will be made even safer.
The student, a 28-year-old female, was stabbed by an unidentified male in the basement of Kennedy Hall, a classroom building. Police have not established a motive for the act and don’t have any suspects. The victim was stabbed with a sharp instrument that is not believed to have been a knife. She was released from FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital on Friday and is expected to fully recover and return to school this week.
The attack must be taken seriously, but it should also be remembered that in the 38 years of its existence, no such act of violence has taken place on the Sandhills campus before. SCC President John Dempley says he and his staff will work with Southern Pines police to minimize the chances of a recurrence.
“We’re going to take whatever steps are necessary to see that this kind of thing doesn’t occur again on our campus,” he says.
No institution and no location is totally immune to violence, but there are few places safer than Sandhills Community College. John Dempsey and his people will keep it that way.
