Bogey: By Generations Center Child Day Care, a division of St. Joseph of the Pines, for temporarily losing track of a child on a field trip to a local park. Fortunately, the child was soon located unharmed.
Birdie: By Good Samaritan Michelle Robertson, who found the child at the park and stayed with him until police arrived at the scene.
Birdie: By St. Joseph CEO Ken Cormier, for informing the child’s parents as soon as he learned of the incident, conducting an internal investigation and taking appropriate disciplinary action.
Birdie: By coach Jimmy Fields and his Lady Dawgs and coach Sammy McNeill and his Renegades, for winning championships in the SEAA World Series, a girls’ fastpitch tournament held in Tennessee recently. The Lady Dawgs won the the 16-under division, while the Renegades claimed the 12-under crown.
Birdie: By Gov. Mike Easley, for opposing efforts in the General Assembly to raid $125 million in state “rainy day” funds.
Birdie: By Matthew Leonard, Kasey Hartsock, and the other members of the Sandhills Sandsharks, for winning the Moore County Summer Swim League Championship.
Birdie: By 14-year-old Molly Robertson of Southern Pines, for being awarded the Kelly Valdes Junior Driving Scholarship for 2002.
Bogey: By Southern Pines lawyer for Marsh Smith, for continuing to try to put up legal roadblocks to the U.S. 1 bypass around Vass and Cameron, which got the green light this week from state environmental regulators. The project is needed for the safety and convenience of the motoring public. And according to state officials, it’s environmentally sound.
Birdie: By Marsh Smith, who is wrong for the right reasons. Smith is a dedicated environmentalist, and his motives are the highest.
Birdie: By Robert E. Lee, for being named to the N.C. High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. Before serving a long and distinguished tenure as superintendent of the Moore County Schools, Lee was principal of Aberdeen High School, where he became one of the most successful girls’ basketball coaches in state history.
Birdie: By Julius Peppers, the former UNC All-American and rookie defensive end for the Carolina Panthers is wowing the coaching staff at the Panthers’ training camp in Spartanburg, S.C. Peppers put a breathtaking move on an offensive lineman in a drill the other day, and one of the coaches said he had seen that done by only one other NFL player — former Detroit Lions All-Pro running back Barry Sanders.
Birdie: By Panthers rookie head coach John Fox, whose infectious enthusiasm seems to have breathed life into the Panthers after last season’s 1-15 disaster.
Birdie: By Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, for their match-play victory over Lee Trevino and Sergio Garcia in the Battle at Bighorn.
Birdie: By Kirk Bell of Southern Pines, for finally upgrading his property on the corner of Bennett Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Bell fixed up the building to make way for his new tenant, Mi Casa Su Casa, a furniture-and-accessories store. The store’s bright colors enhance the appearance of downtown.
