THE PILOT LIGHT: Coble, Myrick Coming for Gala

Two members of Congress will share speaking duties at The Red, White and Blue Gala planned by Moore County Republicans on Sunday, Oct. 9.

Congress-woman Sue Myrick of the 9th District will join Congressman Howard Coble of the 6th District as keynote speakers, according to Joan Thurman, who is coordinating the event with GOP Chairman John Owen. Thurman said the Republican Women, the Republican Men and the Young Republicans are working together to stage the event.

It will be held at Pinehurst’s historic Fair Barn and will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails and dinner served at 7. The Red, White and Blue Gala is so named in honor of Republican presidents.

The Golf Capital Chorus and the Echoes, a trio singing close harmony, will provide entertainment, and Elliott’s on Linden will cater the meal.

Interested persons can call Thurman at 215-0227 for an invitation or further information.

DEM WOMEN — The Democratic Women of Moore County will sponsor a fund-raiser on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Aberdeen Park on U.S. 1 from 5 until 8 p.m.

Johnny and the Cadillacs will provide entertainment, and Hamilton Chicken and Barbecue of Biscoe will cater the meal.

Tickets, at $15 apiece, will be available at the door Saturday or may be purchased in advance from members of the Democratic Women. Children 6 and younger will be admitted free of charge.

Anyone with questions about the event can call Bobbie Burrell at 692-9052.

ANIMALS — The Moore County Board of Commissioners will hold a work session at noon Monday to review a proposed revision of the Animal Control Ordinance with Health Director Robert Wittmann.

The proposal has been discussed at length by animal rights advocates during the public comment periods that precede each board meeting. Opponents of some of the changes were also heard at the Sept. 19 meeting.

The ordinance is not on the agenda for a public hearing or for action by the board at the board’s regular meeting, which will begin at 2 p.m. Monday in the historic courthouse in Carthage. The board will conduct a public hearing before voting on the updated ordinance, but a date has not been set.

Among the items on the 2 p.m. agenda is a request for the board to grant permission to film in the commissioners’ meeting room.

COBLE — Congressman Howard Coble has released a statement in which he urges the public to avoid jumping to conclusions in connection with the indictment this past week of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

Coble, a Greensboro Republican, chairs the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security.

“An indictment is not a conviction,” Coble said. “We should allow the legal system to do its work. I look forward to working with our leadership team to advance the causes of smaller government, lower taxes, eliminating terrorism and providing affordable health care, among other issues. Also, if Tom DeLay is cleared of this one count, I look forward to welcoming him back to his leadership post.”

DeLay stepped down as majority leader after he was charged in Texas with violation of a state campaign finance law.
