Quick Halloween Treats

BY ELLEN MARCUS: Special to The Pilot

Most kids prefer take-out on Halloween.

But no matter how you slice it, popcorn balls, Smarties and M&Ms do not make a complete supper.

The trick is making a balanced meal compete with a bag full of candy. The treat is a ghostly pizza with disappearing toppings and a “boo-tiful” cake. To complete the meal, toss up a salad with toasted pumpkin seeds and sliced apples. Your trick-or-treaters are guaranteed to be “gobblin” it down in no time.

If you are crunched for time, use a boxed cake mix and frosting.

When the cake is done and cooled, place on platter and carefully cut out the word “BOO.” Frost the cake and then fill the inside of the letters with M&Ms or candy corn. If you would rather leave the cake whole, then spell out the word with the M&Ms.

Pizza can be ready in less than 20 minutes with the substitution of refrigerated pizza dough and canned sauce for homemade.

All that is left is assembly.

Drape the pizza dough to resemble a ghost.

Make the toppings disappear by stacking them on the sauce and then cover with cheese. Reserve three slices of pepperoni for the mouth and eyes.
