Mayor Eddie Callahan said the town needs to act quickly.
“Interest rates are starting to rise,” he said. “After the election, we don’t know what they’re going to be. The price of building materials and steel are going up. We’re already a couple of months behind schedule.”
The board has been discussing options for building a new Town Hall and community center for months.
Initially, the board investigated the possibility of renovating the old fire station, but that was deemed to be too expensive.
Another option involved placing a new building in Sandy Ramey Keith Park, but grant regulations regarding park property made that proposal too costly as well.
The board is looking at other sites but hasn’t found one.
“The boards that were in place 10 or 12 years ago started the initial discussions of needing a new community center and Town Hall,” Callahan said, mentioning towns such as Troy, where the Town Hall is a centerpiece of the town. “We think that’s something we need to help promote the image of Vass as a nice place where people want to come to live.”
Callahan said that anyone who might be interested in the possibility of selling or donating some land to the town should contact Town Clerk Jody Smith.
The board tabled action on an agreement with Waste Manage-ment for the annual pick-up of large trash items.
Waste Management offered the service for $8 per cubic yard for pickup and $34 per ton to dump it. The service would be for the pickup and disposal of items such as old mattresses, refrigerators and other appliances.
Callahan said the offer seemed to be too expensive and asked Smith to explore other options.
The board scheduled a public hearing for Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. regarding the adoption of a flood damage prevention ordinance.
Vass resident Jim Martin asked the board to do something about speeding on Oakwood Drive. He said cars are going about 45 mph in a 25-mph zone.
“I can’t walk on Oakwood Drive hardly,” Martin said. “Especially in the morning.”
Callahan asked what time of day the problem was the worst and said the board would look into having more police patrols in the area.
The board voted to recommend that Halloween trick-or-treaters make their rounds between 5 p.m.and 9 p.m. on Oct. 31 instead of the previous Friday or Saturday evening.
