Michigan sculptor Catherine Shinnick will be available to meet the public. The exhibit, on display through Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., also features paintings by Nora Venturelli. The Campbell House Galleries are located at 482 East Connecticut Avenue, Southern Pines.
Shinnick received a master’s in fine arts from Eastern Michigan University and is currently an instructor of fine arts and ceramics at the university. Her sculptures have been exhibited throughout Michigan as well as in Charleston, W.Va., and Chicago. Shinnick was the first artist/scholar in residence at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science in Benzie County, Mich., where she created ceramic and sculptural work.
“Wanting my sculpture to be about beauty and joy and a passion for living, I chose the horse as an image to explore in 1996 when I began my pursuit of the MFA in ceramics,” says Shinnick. “So I decided to focus on the fiery, passionate, and noble aspects of the horse, and to see if I could make images that activate the space and that illustrate the floating sensation of being aboard these magnificent creatures.”
Nora Venturelli received a master’s of fine arts from Eastern Michigan University and is currently an instructor of figure and portrait drawing at the university. Her paintings have been exhibited throughout Michigan, have been accepted into juried exhibitions, and have been awarded for excellence.
“I am inspired by the simplicity and the beauty of a single object and by the people and the landscape that surrounds me,” she says. “I become trapped by the emotion they evoke and can only hope that my work carries these feelings through.”
