Drivers found Bucky and Claire Needham’s courses fun and educational. Two obstacles were timed twice each after dressage and cones, and scores were added to determine the winner.
“Everyone always improves their time the second trip through the obstacle,” Needham said.
Sherrie Davis topped the advanced score sheet with her speedy Morgan, posting the best obstacles score of the entire day. Katie Whaley, back from the Pony World Championships in Europe, pleased the spectators with the only four-in-hand of the event.
Junior driver Molly Robertson and veteran driver Marcie Quist posted the best dressage scores of the day (40) for judge Lefreda Williams. Robertson won the preliminary single horse class with a 40-point margin over a field of four.
In the Preliminary Single Pony class, Leslie Griewe and Jennie Ozzley swapped off the lead until Griewe finally pulled ahead on the obstacles phase to emerge the winner.
Angela Baldwin was competitive in the training division with clean cones and efficient obstacles driving to win with Christiane Rowley’s nimble pony. Tricia Greenleaf drove Joan Wheeler’s horse consistently to win the training horse class.
