Fairway Notebook: Ward Wins Foxfire Tourney

Foxfire: Terry Ward won the 2003 Men’s Club Championship at Foxfire by two strokes, shooting 75-76-76 — 227.

Mark Young was runner-up again this year, scoring 76-76-77—229. Ray Dickerson placed third with a 75-79-80 — 234. Arne Olson won the first flight with a 80-85 — 165 and Bill Facey placed second with 89-84 — 173.

In the second flight, Pat Ogren won with a 84-99 — 183 and Gerry Lashomb was runner-up with 93-99 — 192. Blair Hildebrand won the third flight with 101-93 —194, and Tom McEntee was second with 110-108 — 218.

Mac MacNichol and Pat Ogren defeated Steve Pagano and Blair Hildebrand 2 and 1 to win the Men’s Golf Association annual Four-Ball Tournament. To reach the finals, MacNichol and Ogren defeated Dan Boelter and Joe Harsany, and Pagano and Hildebrand defeated George Galloway and Jim Wise.

The Foxy Niners played a Baker’s One-Half Dozen at 50 percent handicap on the front nine of the Red Fox Course on Sept. 30. Pat McKeon won with a 23. Helen Ferency was second with a 24.

Knollwood: The Rainmakers played a game of low gross, low net and low putts Monday, Oct. 6, with 33 players in four flights.

Low gross winners were Penny Higgins, 42; Georgia Snow, 48; Bernice Leichtnam, 52; and JoAnn Hoff, 55.

Low net winners were Beverly Braunscheidel, 30; Bobbie Benade, 31; Doris Hoffman, 35; and Barbara Farr, 32.

There was a tie between Dorothy Smith and Nancy Tenbroek with 14 low putts each, followed by Mary Moore with 12, Elizabeth Garner with 17.

Carole Amlot (No.9), Mary Moore (No. 5) and Nancy Tenbroek (No. 9) chipped in. Nancy Tenbroek had the only birdie on No. 9.

The Sandblasters played a four-man, two best balls on Oct. 7, with 30 players. Doug Toler, Glen Kendall, Dick Heilman and Bill Parke were first with a 49. Bob Edwards, Dave Smith, Bill Davis and Bill Bradley were second at 50. Wallace Gourley, Paul Sanger, Don Green and Bob Millan were third at 53.

Doug Toler was low gross with a 38. Dick Heilman was low net at 28. Birdies were made by Rick Stone (No. 8), Ron Flock (No. 3), Paul Sanger (No. 5), John Mannion (No. 1), Dick Heilman (No. 9), Bill Davis (No. 6), and Doug Toler (Nos 5 and 9).

Midland: The Ladies Golf Association played a game of of low gross, low net on Oct. 2.

In the 18-hole event, the results were:

Flight 1 — Gross, Sally Kelly, 103; Net, Sally Stultz, 74.

Flight 2 — Gross, Georgia Snow, 106; Net, Peg Baran, 71.

In the nine-hole competition, the reselts were:

Flight 1 — Gross, Dorothy Smith, 49; Net, Alberta Settzo, 37.

Flight 2 — Gross, Steve Middlekauf, 55; Net, Margene Chapman, 38.

Margaret Goodfellow birdied No. 2. Chip-ins were made by Georgia Snow (No. 7), Carol Lithicum (No. 4), Margaret Goodfellow (No. 2) and Dot Heilman (No. 17).

The Ladies Golf Association played a game of Low Net — Plate Day on Oct. 9. In the 18-hole event, Penny Higgins won the first flight with a 66. Jane Klotzbach had an 81 to win the second flight.

In the nine-hole event, Carolyn Crenson had a 37 to win the first flight. Helen Carty won the second flight with a 35, followed by Mim Pierce with a 39.

Pat Easter birdied No. 17 and Joanne Rabdau No. 15. Dorothy Smith chipped-in on No. 6, Joanne Rabdau on No. 15 and Pat Easter on No. 17.

Art Gula won the Men’s Golf Association Annual Summer Match Play tournament. Rick Stone was the runner-up. John Goodfellow and Chuck Crum were the flight winners.

Pinehurst: The Birdies played a game of “Cha-Cha 1-2, 1-2-3” at 95 percent with semi-matched handicaps on Course No. 1 on Oct. 7 with 96 ladies playing.

Class AA/BB — Ann Nash, Judy Silver, Helen Brissette and Pamela Irwin with a 104; Mary Barbero, Bonnie Hanly, Barbara Moore, and Marilyn Gordon, 110; Bette Rycroft, Joan Sponik, Ann Hughes and Ann Culwick in a match of cards at 111; and Diana Sherman, Tee Noggle, Margaret Van Riper and Jacque Weston with a 111 in a match of cards.

Class CC/DD — Miyuki Kallagis, Shirley Kronbach, Norma Schultz and Marjorie Frost, 113; Martha Jack, Ellie Ray, Dorinda McNamara and Louise Weiss, 114; Josie Maniskas, Marie Richmond, Addie Johns and Andrea Wells, 116; and Mary Lou Sutter, Judy Sedivy, Darlene Skinner and Nora Sinclair, 117.

Helen Brissette, Doris Richardson, Barbara Moore, Mary Barbero, Bonnie Hanly, Trich Christina, Kathleen Richardson, Joan Sponik, Pattie Molloy, Penny Waters, Jacque Weston, and Susan Marentette (three) scored birdies.

The Chippers played a game of low net on Course No. 1 Thursday, Oct. 2. Bettie Wilson took first place. Ginny Bolton was second, Jody Hale, third, and Maureen Horansky, fourth.

Bernice Sullivan chipped-in on No. 3.

The Silver Foils played a tournament of best ball of pair, low gross/low net on Tuesday, Oct. 7, with 50 players.

Jackie Meyer and Nan Wood were low gross with a 76, followed by Kathy Mangarell and Linda Verzera with a 77, and M. J. Zinn and Emma Howerton with an 80.

Gerri LoFrese and Shirley Wauters were low net at 62. Mary Derr and Marge Davis were second with a 64 in a match of cards. Nancy Geddes and Nancy Heilman were third with a 64 in a match of cards.

Pinewild: The Women’s Golf Association played a game of 1-2-3 repeat on Oct. 7. Each team played one best ball net on the first hole, two best balls net on the second hole, three best balls net on the third hole and -then repeated the sequence throughout the 18 holes.

AB Flight —Marilyn Otto, Joan Fruiesen, Chris Robertson and Mary Stanek were first with 129 points. Karen Wirt, Mary Scribner and Gail Meyer were second with 130 points. Judith Kelley, Pat Milburn, Mary Johnson and Joan Grimone were third with 131 points.

CD Flight —Phyllis Clark, Joyce Rittling, RuthAnn Porter and Marye Bigler were first with 130 points. Gayl Welter, Jean Vincenti and Lynne Moore were second with 130 points. Monica Lipka, Adrienne Oxendine, MaryAnn Smith and Carol French were third with 133 points.

Seven Lakes: Betty Larson and June Hale tied at net 66 to win the Cordial Cup Tournament played Oct. 7. Flight winners were:

First flight — Jean Keating, 70; Lois Schliepsiek, 71; and Grae Starwald, 73.

Second flight — Mary Ann Allen and Lucy Dunn Martin tied at 70; and Anne Pacella, 72.

Third flight — Marilyn Hoffman, 67; Patricia McKeon, 73; and Carole Barnard, 75.

Southern Pines: The Par Seekers played a Member’s Cup low net tournament Sept. 30, with the following results:

First flight — Cricket Gentry, 71; Bonnie Quesenberry and Ann Kendall tied at 73; and Cathy Murphy, 77.

Second flight — Elaine Workman, 74; Penny Burke, 75; and Ginger Addis, 77.

Third flight — Stella Karshner, 71; Billie Joyce Hill, 76; and Pegge Banks, 77.

The Member’s Cup low net tournament was played Oct. 7, with the following results:

First flight — Cricket Gentry, Bonnie Quesenberry and Joan Williford tied at 72; Joan McCreedy, 74; and Ann Kendall, 75.

Second flight — Susan Ray, 71; Ginger Addis, 75; and Flo DeSandy, Pat Easter and Dot Burtis tied at 79.

Third flight — Stella Karshner, 74; Jenny Stuber, 75; and Kay Gebhard, 78.

Whispering Pines: The Pinettes ladies golf association held a “Players Choice Nine” tournament Tuesday, Oct. 7. The flight winners were:

Flight 1 — Sandy Starr and Sandy Hallet tied for first place. Alice Sheridan and Hope Dugenske tied for second.

Flight 2 — Doris Lanning was first. Marsha Paff, Nell Crawford, Sue Gaddone and Bonnie Wildman tied for second.

Flight 3 — Sallie Daughtrey and Elouise Burns tied for first place. Mary Galtere was second.

Flight 4 — Helen Montoro was first; Shirley Sherrill, second; and Mary June Mills, third.

Whispering Woods: The Ladies Golf League played low gross/low net tournament on Oct. 7. The low gross winner was Isabelle Daley with a 73, followed by Marti Libbey, 88; Lynn Joyce, 91; Mary Ella Miller, 98; and Audry Bronk, 101.

Fanny Maines and Judy Studer tied with a 69 to win low net, followed by Bonnie Gollehon at 71; Carol Bartlett, 73; and Gerry Scalia and Mary Pat Curl tied with at 74.

Ellen Taylor is the new Club Champion at Whispering Woods. She won the two-day club championship tournament Sept. 30 and Oct. 2.

The flight winners were Alice Pardy, flight 1; Shirley Smedley, filght 2; Judy Adams, flight 3; Carol Huber, flight 4; Fanny Maines, flight 5; and Shirley Ross, flight 6.
