Miss Moore Pageant Saturday

The annual Miss Moore County Scholarship Pageant, a Miss North Carolina preliminary sponsored by the Miss Moore County Scholarship Association, will be held Saturday Oct 4, at 7 p.m. in the Robert E. Lee Auditorium at Pinecrest High School.

The Miss Moore County Scholarship Association, an affiliate of the Miss America organization, is committed to providing young American women with the opportunity to enhance their personal and professional development through scholarship programs and achievement-oriented opportunities.

A special guest at this year’s pageant will be Miss North Carolina 2003, Dana Reason who recently participated in the Miss America competition.

Katie Whitley, Miss Moore County 2001 and Ashley House, Miss North Carolina 2001 will serve as co-emcees. Tickets cost $10, and may be purchased from the contestants, from any Miss Moore County Association member and at the door.

Cameron Antiques

The Cameron Antiques and Collectibles Fair will be held Saturday Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the outside dealers will be arriving before daylight and the most ardent collectors will be on the prowl early. The 12 permanent antique shops will be joined with 350 antiques and collectibles dealers from North Carolina and beyond.

Most of the 12 permanent antique shops are located in restored homes and buildings that are over a century old. Cameron is located between Sanford and Southern Pines, off US #1 on Hwy. 24/27.

There is something for everyone, from fine antique pieces to small collectibles. There will be food provided by the local churches and civic groups, plus some of the shops offer lunch. There is no charge for the fair, and plenty of parking for a nominal donation to the churches and civic groups. For more information call 245-1185.

Benefit Concert

The Christian United Outreach Center and W2 Entertainment present a night of music featuring country, bluegrass, gospel, oldies, beach and comedy at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10 at Asheboro High School. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is non-perishable food for the food bank.

The host is Tim Walker. Featured performers include Levi Austin, Cassie Garner, Bill & Libby Hicks, the Hook Norton Band, the Donna Hughes Band, the McKenzie Brothers, Ronnie Prevette and Rita Smithey.

The school is located on Hwy. 64 in Asheboro. For information, call 336-625-1500.

Harvest Festival

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the John Blue Cotton Festival in Laurinburg promises to be the biggest and best ever this year. Run by volunteers, this festival is located on the grounds of the historic home of a local cotton farmer, John Blue.

The festival is Saturday, Oct. 11 and Sunday Oct. 12. Gates open at 9 a.m. and the festival gets underway at 10 a.m. and runs to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Sunday the gates open at 9 a.m. for the church service at 9:30 and close at 4 p.m.

US 15-401, US 501, NC 79, US 47/I-74 all go straight through town so getting here is easy. Find the Wal-Mart on 15-401/501 Bypass and turn on West Boulevard. Continue west for about a mile and the festival grounds are on the left.
