Patriots Don’t Look Back in Taking Titles

Pinecrest seems to have a lock on the Southeastern 4-A Conference cross country championship.
The latest installment of the Patriots’ dominance took place Wednesday at Lumberton. Both the boys and girls finished in first place in the conference meet. The championships come on top of sailing through the regular season without a loss.
The girls haven’t loss a conference meet since 1992, while the boys haven’t dropped a conference clash since 1994.
“We’ve been on a bit of a roll,” Patriot coach Jeff Moody said.
While rolling at Lumberton, the Patriots not only claimed team championships, but also had the conference runner of the year for both boys and girls, the coach of the year for both teams and 11 all-conference runners.
Jason Lee finished first overall in the boys’ race in a time of 16:37, earning runner of the year honors. Lia Andrews finished first overall in the girls’ race in a time of 19:25, also earning runner of the year honors for the Patriots. Jeff Moody was selected by his fellow coaches as both the boys and girls coach of the year.
The Pinecrest boys finished in first with 20 points, easily outdistancing second-place Lumberton that finished with 49 points.
After Lee churned his way to first, the next three spots belonged to Pinecrest. Auburn Staples finished second in a time of 17:21, Odell White third in a time of 17:37 and Grant Karshner fourth in a time of 17:40. Rounding out the top-five finishers for Pinecrest was Jeff Garrison, who finished 10th in a time of 18:14.
All five of those runners earned all-conference honors. The top-10 finishers in the race were named to the honor squad.
Andrews paced the girls to their victory, and broke the course record at Lumberton in the process. The girls were one point from perfection, finishing with a team total of 16 points.
“She broke the course record going away,” Moody said. “I think she broke it by at least a minute. Lumberton used their old course, which was last used five years ago when we won the championship.”
After Andrews, the Patriots had the next three finishers. Rebekkah Bishop finished second in a time of 20:54, Lindsay Alzamora third in a time of 21:24 and Kassia Kowalick fourth in a time of 21:28. Kateria Bruno finished in sixth with a time of 22:36 and Jessi Starr finished 10th in a time of 23:16.
Although only the top-five finishers were used for scoring purposes, all six of the girls were all-conference by virtue of finishing in the top 10 of the race.
Next up for the Patriots is the regional meet at Mt. Tabor a week from Saturday.
