‘Roman Feast” Reenforces Lessons at Elise

Contributed

Elise Middle School’s sixth-graders held a Roman feast on Nov. 10, in the media center.

Students researched the history of Pompeii, Italy, preparing to read a short story for Beth Hinson’s Language Arts classes. Sixth-grade teachers Hinson, Julia Phillips and Ned Spohn, along with media specialist Malcolm Dale, coordinated the event.

Mary Beth Mahler, an English as a Second Language teacher, talked to the students about living in Italy. She shared pictures from her time there.

Students dressed in togas and ate fig cookies, cheese and crackers, black and green olives, mixed nuts and grapes, and drank grape juice.

A talent show followed the feast.

The sixth-grade band performed, with a variety of singers, musicians, and poetry readers. Ethan Garner wowed the audience by playing several chords of various popular songs on his electric guitar.

A drawing for three Roman coins, donated by Spohn, was held at the end of the celebration. Lucky winners were Maria Moore, Ashley Giles and Alejandra Lopez.

“I liked it when Ethan played the guitar,” Marco Lopez, a student, said.

This activity demonstrates the Roman culture’s food, entertainment and clothing.
