The Pinecrest Competitive Speech and Debate Team will host The People Speak, Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m. in the school’s media center.
People Speak is program that is part the National Forensic League’s initative to bring together adult members of the local community with high school debate members.
Designed as a mock student congress, the evening is scheduled for students presentations on resolutions of national interest. Audience members will have opportunity to take the floor and question student presenters or to make speeches themselves.
Junior Andrew Garrison, student coordinator, senior Mike Kowalick and sophomore Jake Hamilton will share responsibilities as presiding officers for the evening. All resolutions pertain to matters of federal legislation currently being considered by the U.S. Congress.
Resolutions will address border control of the United States, a reduction in the nation’s nuclear arsenal, and a reformation of the United Nations.
Run in the format currently in use in Student Congress competitions throughout the country, students will first address audience members on different topics of national concern before the floor is opened for questioning and follow-up speeches from the audience. Each speaker is limited to three minutes with an additional two-minute question period. Community members are urged to come prepared to speak and debate topics with the students and audience members.
The debate is open to all concerned citizens of all ages.
The actual resolutions are posted on the Internet at www.pinecresthighschool.org, and can be accessed through the link under The People Speak.
