Fairway Notebook: Chippers Play Par 4s

Pinehurst: The Chippers played a game counting only par 4s. Jan Polisoto was first with a 21 in a match of cards over Bev Raffaele. Marilyn Fleming was third with a 22. Joan Frost finished fourth with a 24.

The Women’s Golf Association played a contest using one best ball net on par 4s and 5s and one best ball gross on all par 3s. Dee Bilodeau, Jean Sundstrom, Tricia Johnson and Pat Peterson were first with a 69.

Tee Noggle, Ilse Roberts, Jean Funderburg and Elizabeth Morgan were second with a 70. Bonnie Kendall, Nathalie Thomas, Kay McGowen and Barbara Moore were third at 72. Silvia Bisbe, Courtney Herndon, Maggie Langley and Linda Smythe finished fourth with a 73. Cindy Motter, Linda Verzera and Jackie Meyer took fifth place with a 74 in a match of cards.

The Birdies played a Nassau tournament Nov. 15 on Course No. 4 using one best ball on par 4s and 5s and two best balls on par 3s. Norma Schultz, Silvia Bisbe, Aurele Timken and Susan Marentette were first overall with a 67 by a match of cards with Dorothy Brown, Kathy Townsend, Josie Manikas and Louise Weiss. Vera Pelekouda, Olive Muiter, Jo Rolman and a blind draw were third with a 68.

Mary Lou Sutter, Pam Cochran, Charlotte Cable and Jan Polisoto were first on the front nine with a 33 in a match of cards with the teams of Dot Olson, Sara Sutton, Carol Mulcahy and Evelyn Bednarz; and Carol Collins, Sheryl Robinson, Bobbie Smith and a blind draw.

Barbara Moore, Bonnie Hanly, Pam Irwin and Jackie Meyer were first on the back nine with a 34 in match of cards with June Eichele, Sue Griggs, Joan Sponik and Pat Wallace. Pat Durkee, Phyllis Reaper, Rita Clayton and Jean Sundstrom were third.

Pam Cochran, Chris Lawn, Bonnie Hanly, Jackie Meyer (two), Dianne Yelovich (three), Sheryl Robinson, Susan Marentette, Silvia Bisbe, Joan Sponik, Ellie Ray, Rita Dinapoli, Tee Noggle, Chris Mastaler, Linda Verzera and Jean Sundstrom (two) carded birdies.

The Birdies played an individual low gross and low net game Nov. 22 on Course No. 3.

Class A — Gross: Linda Verzera, 84; Susan Marentette, 90; Carolyn Clemons, 91; and Jackie Meyer, 92. Net: Chris Lawn, 73; Charlotte Cable, 79; and Tonya Brown, 80, by a match of cards over Cindy Motter.

Class B — Gross: Cathy Renner, 98.

Class C — Gross: Pam Cochran, 100; Darya Glass, 105; Therese Witczak, 108; and Jaque Weston, 113. Net: Mary Jane White, 76; Olive Muiter, 80; Helen Brissette, 83; and Mary Lou Sutter, 92.

Class D — Gross: Pat Wallace, 104; and Pat Durkee, 105. Net: Jo Rolman, 82; and Rita DiNapoli, 89.

Jacie Meyer and Carolyn Clemons carded birdies.

Foxfire: The Ladies Golf Association played a nine-hole captain’s choice tournament, on the front nine of the Old Course. Pat Bryan, Leslie Frusco, Millie Comninaki and Betsy Wands, and Grace Shea, Flo LaShomb, Elsa Schermerhorn and Rita Lapkin tied at 38. Phyllis Bottoms, Betty Gregory, Barbara Arnold and Shirley Kirschner had a 39.

Whispering Pines: The Ninettes held its end-of-the-year contest followed by a general meeting on Monday, Nov. 7. The team winners were Dee Heine, Mary Jakucyk, Alma Jones, Judy Loughlin, 43; and Diane Cunningham, Sue Leary, Pam Lyons and Barbara Saul, and Gail Coffin, Marilyn Navarro, Paula Scanlon and Connie Tingley tied at 44.

Mary Jakucyk was announced as the Ninettes champion. Joyce Reitler was named most improved, and Marilyn Navarro won the top ringer’s prize.

Sandra Grose, Paula Scanlon, and Diana Shuler won birdie pins. Sandy Gerdes, Sue Leary, Florence Mohor, Marilyn Navarro and Paula Scanlon were awarded chip-in pins.

The Winter Twilight Tournament was played Nov. 18, on the River Course using a modified captain’s choice format. The results were Jerry and Sandy Gerdes and Larry and Daryl Pierce, 27.5; Tom and Barb Harp and Peter and Alma Jones, 28; Bill and Midge Towne and Win and Judy Loughlin, and Len and Millie Mills and Junior and Anne Jones tied at 29.

National: The Women’s Golf Association played a nine-hole individual low net tournament. Dot Kennihan was first with a 35. Kathy Fiske was second at 35, and Tricia Knight came in third with a 38.

Midland: The Ladies Golf Association played a Turkey Shoot, low net event. The results in the 18-hole division were Sally Kelly, 72; Joan Barriage, 77; and Sally Stultz, 82. In the nine-hole division, Beverly Braunscheidel had a 40.

Sally Kelly birdied No. 2. Helen Mannion chipped in on No. 5; Peg Baran on No. 4, Penny Higgins on No. 7, and Sally Kelly on Nos. 2 and 11.

The Men’s Golf Association played a Nassau tournament Nov. 16 using two best balls of the foursome. Lee Hancock, Dick Baird, Walt Lang and a blind draw were the overall winners with a 121.

Jerry Kelly, Paul Aschmetat, Bill Crenson and Winton Klotzbach won the front nine with a 60. Ron Stevenson, Jim Braunscheidel, Tom Delehaunty and Bob Edwards won the back nine with a 62.

Art Gula won low gross with a 76. Paul Aschmetat carded the best net at 65.

In a nine-hole Skins Game, the winners were Carl Arnett on No. 3, Bob Hoff on No. 7 and Carl Arnett on No. 8.

Knollwood: The Sandblasters played a contest using one best ball of the twosome Nov. 22. Paul Leach and Mac Andrews were first with a 26. Bill Clark and Ken Batchelder were second with a 29. Ron Flock and Paul Cottam were third with a 31 by a match of cards.

Mac Andrews was low gross with a 39 and low net at 28. Andrews birdied No. 1 and Ron Flock carded a birdie on No. 6

Pinewild: The Women’s Golf Association played a “Joker’s Wild” contest on the front nine holes of the Magnolia and Holly courses Nov. 17.

Blue flight — Peggy Clark, Linda Critzer, Lynne Davison and Pat Gannaway, 134; Judith Kelley, Carole Roth, Patricia King and Judi Leggett, 139, in a match of cards over Karen Wirt, Dee McMahon, Sue Zende and Yoland Paszkiewica.

Red flight — Grace Hill, Nancy Reutter, Carol Smith and Kathy Samchalk, 130; Suki Ellers, Mary Stanek, Diana Santilli and Jean Weiler, 132; and Janet Clark and Adrienne Oxendine, 137.

The Men’s Golf Association played a contest using one best ball on par-5 holes, two on par 4s and three on par 3s on Nov. 14.

Charles Weaver, Walt Kaczynski, Vince Leone and a blind draw were first at 16 under. Howard Shubert, Ed Davidheiser, Jan Novak and a blind draw were second at 15 under. Rich Winkley, Jim Pryor, Dick Keener and a blind draw were third at 14 under in a match of cards over Steve Leggett, Tom Patochek, Mike Fowley and Bill Stevens, and Bill Pozdol, Ted Davison, Marty Samchalk and Ron Cherep.

Individual winners were:

Flight 1 — Gross: Spike Billings, 77; John Schmitt, 81. Net: Charles Weaver and Bill Pozdol tied at 72.

Flight 2 — Gross: Walt Kaczynski, 72, in a match of cards over Jim McMahon. Net: Michael Weisser, 71; Jim Pryor, 72.

Flight 3 — Gross: David Blessing, 85; Larry Parkinson, 88. Net: Ron Cherep, 68; Jim Miller, 71.

Flight 4 — Gross: Bud Kanaley, 90; Ray Slywka, 91. Net: Ed Davidheiser, 70, in a match over cards over Bill Stevens.

John Schmitt was closest to the pin on No. 3 on the Magnolia and Zande on No. 7. On the Holly Course, Charles Weaver was closest to the pin on No. 8, Bell Kennedy on No. 3 and Bill Graning on 17.
