E-SU Welcomes New Season

The English-Speaking Union 2005-2006 season’s opening program was met with enthusiasm by the membership. The evening began with a welcoming reception for new members, followed by dinner and Dr. Elgiva Watson’s presentation, “Benjamin Franklin and the Ladies.”

Kris Bebout, senior English teacher at Pinecrest High School, thanked the E-SU for the scholarship that allowed her to attend Exeter College (part of Oxford University) this past summer. Bebout explained how the experience would help her give her students a better reference and understanding of English life and history.

Formally organized in 1920, The English-Speaking Union of the United States is committed to promoting scholarship and the advancement of knowledge through the effective use of English in an expanding global community.

The Sandhills Branch sponsors scholarships for study in England and for scholars and teachers in England to visit here. Other sponsorships include International Public Speaking Competition, UK Page Scholar visit to the Sandhills and the Walter Hines Page Scholarship Program.

The Sandhills Branch webpage can be accessed at www.esuus.org, click on “Branches,” then scroll to “North Carolina” and finally click on “Sandhills/Pinehurst.”

The E-SU welcomes interested individuals for membership. Call Jane Galan, at 910-215-5645.
