The Next to Die
By Kevin O’Brien
Pinnacle, 2005, $4.99
Sean Olson is an attorney who supports her children and terminally ill husband, who has ALS. She agrees to defend star Avery Cooper, who is accused of murdering an obsessed fan. Sean soon realizes that someone is trying to discredit not only her client, but also his female co-star, Dayle Sutton, as well. The two are making a controversial movie dealing with gay rights.
The right-wing group called Soldiers for an American Moral Order makes public a private tape made by Cooper and his wife, and then tries to expose Sutton as a lesbian because of an incident that happened many years ago.
Once I started this book, it was difficult to put it down.
The Last Victim
By Kevin O’Brien
Pinnacle, 2005, $6.99
Bridget Corrigan is assisting her twin brother, Brad, with his campaign for the Senate. Bridget, Brad and two of their friends from high school, Olivia and Fuller, have a secret that could certainly derail Brad’s campaign, and it appears that someone else knows as well.
When Olivia is found dead, ostensibly of suicide, Bridget attends her funeral, and there runs into Fuller, who tells her he’s been trying to contact Brad. After Fuller dies in an “accident,” Bridget, who already suspects she’s being stalked, is now sure of it.
O’Brien certainly keeps the plot moving rapidly in this book. There are plenty of candidates for the “bad guy,” and a few surprises along the way.
Threat Level
By William Christie
Pinnacle, 2005, $6.99
This contemporary thriller is right up to speed, dealing with terrorism and Al Qaeda.
The Secretary of Defense forms a secret unit of small teams of military operatives to hunt terrorists all over the globe.
Master Sgt. Ed Storey leads a team into the Philippines, discovering a plot to assassinate the U.S. president.
As with all good thrillers, this one is full of twists and turns to keep the readers guessing.
