In so doing, we must first recognize Sheriff Carter, Fire Chief McCaskill and Public Safety Director Brooks for making their units available to our Scouts. Deputy Thomas Carpenter, a Tiger Cub leader himself, organized the event, which was held at Pinehurst Fire Station No. 2.
To initiate the adventure, Lt. Rick Tufts of the Fire Department provided a great personal safety lecture to the boys and then dazzled them with a demonstration of an infrared, heat-imaging gadget. The boys could not resist the lieutenant’s invitation to climb through a fire truck. Their little fingerprints were discovered everywhere, especially on the shiny parts of the truck.
The eyes of the Cub Scouts doubled in size as the sheriff’s K-9 team of Deputy Henry Shamburger and his drug-sniffing assistant, Anusca, sprang into action to provide a close-up demonstration of a drug search. The Scouts were as excited as the dog.
Unexpectedly, we only got to see our skillful rescue squad members leap into their truck and speed off into the night to do their duty. The sounds and colorful lights of the truck rushing into action did not fail to further electrify our first graders. A good time was had by all.
To these outstanding officers and community servants, we say, “Thanks!” And well done. As we rest in the comfort of our homes, courageous men and women are at work here for us. Their particular investment in our future leaders has not gone unnoticed.
