STARS Has Busy Month of Field Trips

CONTRIBUTED

The third, fourth and fifth grades from STARS (Sandhills Theatre Arts Renaissance School) experienced the exhibition of local artists at the Campbell House. 250 varied paintings and pictures were examined in September. They made sketch books and toured the historic house in small groups, stopping to draw their favorites. It was an extremely educational and enjoyable experience! Parent support and participation by accompanying staff members was greatly appreciated.

Earlier in September, the fifth-grade students traveled to Robbins to view history. As part of their U.S. history program, they saw John Edwards announce his candidacy for president. They were impressed by the crowd, the TV crews and all the happenings.

Also in September, the fifth-grade students made the short trip to Pinehurst for a student matinee of “Fiddler on the Roof” by Sandhills Theatre Company. This experience included a live orchestra, the surprise of “theater in the round” and talking to the actors afterwards. They thoroughly enjoyed the music and the play. Discussions and presentations within the class and for other classes followed later that week. Shawn Leach, Claire Shadomy and Carolanne Fleming made presentations.

The lower grades had a field trip to the Pressley Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze. “They came back with great stories about their adventure and pumpkins,” says a spokesman.

STARS is a public school. It was founded in 1999. Instruction follows the North Carolina curriculum, however this is enhanced with dance, drama, art, music, etc. The core belief is to fully enhance the students’ mental and social development in a warm and supportive environment. The permanent school grounds are off Route 1 near Hyland Hills Country Club. The school number is 695-1004 for more information.
