Kennel Club Wins ‘Best in Show’ With ‘Our Dogs’

BY NONA BURRELL: Special to The Pilot

Our Dogs: A Century of Images and Words from the AKC Gazette

Ballantine, 2003, $29.95

Walk thru the pages of remarkable dog pictures, heartfelt experiences and stories from the lives of a potpourri of writers, handlers and just people and their canines. This is your adventure as you peruse the pages of this amazing book.

The American Kennel Club has been publishing the magazine AKC Gazette for over 100 years, and it holds the honor of being the oldest dog magazine in the world.

“Our Dogs” is a compilation of years of important written work and moving photographs published in the Gazette from the very beginning of the magazine to the most current issue. It is obvious that everyone who has contributed to this publication has shared their lives with those lovable furry critters known as dogs.

This book is filled with moving stories of people who have loved their dogs, trained with them, were at war with them and lived the warmth of them.

The photos are sometimes funny, sometimes so moving you’ll not be able to hold back the tears. The variety of writers and the eras in which they wrote colored the pages throughout.

Anyone who has gone through the aging of a beloved pet will find the personal narratives about this experience so very touching.

The brave war dog stories reaffirmed once again the devotion, dependency and bond between those awesome dogs and their soldier handlers. There were tales of show biz dogs and celebrity owned dogs. The tailwaggers came from all sorts of background greatly brought out by the excellent photography. The color shots were gorgeous, but I found the black and white pictures even more poignant.

As I read “Our Dogs” I was reminded of a fact well known by anyone who has had a dog share his life.

Dogs are not judgmental and do not expect anything from you but a warm bed, a bit of food, a walk, and hopefully your love. This is truly a reminder to all of us how very valuable “Our Dogs” are in our world.

I would purchase this book just to have a look at the photo of the elderly gent petting and silently conversing with his beautiful black Labrador Retriever. This is truly the ideal book for any dog person on your holiday gift list or for anyone who enjoys a good coffee table book.

Nona Burrell lives in Pinehurst with her two cocker spaniels and two cats.
