Four Candidates Seek Seats on PCC Board
The annual process of electing new members to the Pinehurst Country Club’s Board of Governors is under way.
Ballots have been mailed to eligible voters and should be returned to the Election Committee no later than 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4. Sealed ballots may be deposited in the locked ballot box in the clubhouse lobby or mailed to Election Committee, Pinehurst Country Club, PO Box 668, Pinehurst, NC 28370.
Results will be announced at the Annual Meeting scheduled for 9 a.m. and again at 6 p.m. on Dec. 9 in the Resorts Dining Room.
The candidates are John Bennett, Gene Marchand, Bart O’Connor and Andy Thomas.
Bennett and his wife, Didi, moved to Pinehurst in May of 1996. After graduating from Yale, he entered the Officer Candidate School program and served as a Naval Officer for 28 years retiring as a Navy Captain.
After earning his master’s degree in business from Temple Univer-sity, he took a position as executive director of a non-profit charitable organization supporting Navy and Marine Corps families in the Middle Atlantic region.
Bennett has been active with two golf groups, the Scramblers and the Men’s Golf Association (MGA), where he has served for five years as the membership chairman and was chairman of the MGA in 2002. He has also worked with the Member-Guest organizations for five years. He is a member of the Tin Whistles.
Marchand and her husband, Lou, retired to Pinehurst in 1987, built their home on course No. 6 and became active members of the Pinehurst Country Club. She is a graduate of Averett College in Danville, Va. After raising four children, she entered the business world once again. Her last place of employment was as administrative assistant to the General Manager of the Actor’s Fund of America.
She became involved quickly in committee work with her church, community activities and the Pinehurst Country Club. She has worked on various committees for the Birdies and Women’s Golf Association (WGA) and is a past president of the WGA. She is most proud of having instituted the “Rally for Life” cancer program sponsored each year by the WGA.
She is currently a governor of the Board of Governors and serves as chairwoman of the Rules and Waivers Committee, Communication Log and oversees the election process for the Board of Governors. Marchand has also been secretary to the Board for the past six years.
O’Connor and his wife, Martha, have been members of Pinehurst Country Club for 13 years. He is a graduate of Colgate University and spent 35 years in marketing and sales with Colgate Pallmolive. He served for 11 years on the Board of Ttrustees at Marywood Uni-versity in Sscranton, Pa.
In 1996, he and his wife became full members of the club. He was active with the Pinehurst Newcomers and currently serves on the board of The Friends of Weymouth in Southern Pines.
He chaired the Amenities Committee in his first year with the Board of Governors and in his second year headed up the newly created Member Relations Committee. He is currently the vice president of the board and continues as chair of the Member Relations Committee.
O’Connor enjoys gardening, photography, woodworking, travel and golf. He and his wife have five children and thirteen grandchildren.
Thomas and his wife, Nathalie, retired to Pinehurst in February 2000. He grew up in Colorado Springs, graduated from Dartmouth College, and received an MBA from Babson College. His first job was selling dynamite for Atlas Powder Com-pany but his lifetime career was in the computer services area. He has written two books and was adjunct professor of International Business at Nichols College in Dudley, Ma.
He is currently a columnist for The Pilot, trustee of the Sherry Bean Fund, secretary and webmaster for the Dartmouth Class of 1958, family custodian of the Wendell Prize and Harvard, and is a part-time employee at Arbor Nursery & Landscaping.
Thomas is treasurer of the Scramblers, assistant membership chairman for the MGA and on the Board of Governor’s Member Relations Committee. |
