Vass Reform Group Gets 3-2 Board Majority

BY THOMAS DAIL

Politics in Vass is like a box of chocolates. You just never know what you are going to get.

According to Tuesday night’s unofficial results, voters gave the Vass Citizens for Reform a 3-to-2 majority on the Board of Commissioners.

But the voters also chose Eddie Callahan, the non-coalition mayoral candidate who moved back to Vass, his childhood home, just three months ago.

And a non-coalition candidate for the board, Rora Kellis, was squeezed out by just one vote — a situation that may change when provisional ballots are counted on Friday afternoon.

"I’m kind of the Forrest Gump of politics," Callahan said. "It’s kind of a shock. Tommy (Oldham, the other mayoral candidate) is a good guy. If he had been elected, I’d have been all right with that."

Vass voters selected coalition candidates Donald Bridgers ,with 113 votes, and Jeff Lassiter, with 93 votes, for commissioner.

Out of 467 eligible voters in the town of about 600 people, 176 went to the polls — a turnout of 38 percent.

Susan Frye Stroder and John Wallace, both non-coalition candidates, also won election to the Town Board, with 107 and 94 votes, respectively.

Voters elected coalition candidate Stan Eury with 78 votes, edging Kellis by one vote. Coalition candidate and former commissioner James Hudson missed the cut by just six votes.

Despite the apparent split in support, Bridgers said he thought the next board could work together on issues, rather than divide into rival factions.

"All each one of us wants is pretty much the same thing," Bridgers said.

Wallace, a non-coalition commissioner, expressed a similar sentiment.

"I think we can all work together," he said. "My big thing is making sure we do proper planning — do the best for the town of Vass."

Eury said he was "happy that a majority of the people in town chose me to represent them. I intend to carry out the campaign promises I made to the people of Vass." Those promises include lowering taxes and promoting growth, industry and beautification.
